Recent 1950Pro Equivalent?

Long time lurker, first time poster!

I have a Powercolor 1950Pro 512MB that has been crashing/blackscreening up in random games now for months and I am finally tired of dealing with it. I am going to put together a completely new rig in a couple months, but would like to replace the 1950Pro in my current PC with an equivalent or near-equivalent card, preferably <$100.

Do folks have any suggestions? ATI/NVIDIA matters not.

you can get a LOT of card these days for less than $100. 4850 is probably the best card you can get for that price, 4830 is cheaper, 4670 is cheaper still but still good, 9600 gso is still a much better card than your 1950pro and can often be found in the wild for $40-$50 AR.

here's a handy chart: http://www.tomshardware.com/re...phics-card,2404-7.html

if you're just going to throw it in there for a very short term I'd stick with something cheap yet good like the 9600 gso, if you're planning to put it in your new rig and use it for a long time then one of the others mentioned will probably work well for you in the medium/long term.

I think the 3650 is around the same speed as the X1900XT, so just about any video card would give you at least equal performance.

Are you AGP or PCI-Express? Are you sure the x1950 is causing the problems?

Anyhow, 4850 is often under $100 and would be fantastic.

a 1900xt is about 50% faster than a 3650 and a 1950pro is somewhere in between those two cards.

What toyota said. HD3650 (aka HD2600XT) are terrible cards performance wise. If you want cheap get a 9600GSO or a HD4670. Those two will smoke a X1900XT (and even more so the HD3650) and are the cheapest worthwhile cards I'd say.

The only good midrange cards ATi produced in its history are the 9500Pro and the the HD4670 imo. The 9600XT was such a let down (slower than 9500Pro...), X600 was a rebranded 9600XT so it sucked too (not to mention it was launched with the X800 series...). The X700 was VERY late, hard to get, not very fast and quickly disappeared from the market (yield issues, no OCing at all and pricy so the 6600GT was a better buy anyway). The X1600 was an abomination - bad performance, terrible drivers, I still get the goose bumps when thinking about those cards. Then there was the HD2600XT - don't even get me started on this one. Gaming card my ass 😀 HD3650 was a die shrink, nothing else, so it sucked as bad.

So I'd say get a HD4670 or a 9600GSO until you're ready to do a full upgrade. Unless you're running an old Athlon XP or similar, you'll be fine.

what about power consumption?
4650 takes more power then 1950pro - keep that in mind to allow keep existing PSU
otherwise 4850 would be hard to beat price/perf wise - it can be get for $100 range AR

I assume you mean 4850 uses more power than x1950pro.

both 4650 & 4850 uses more power than 1950pro
4650 / 4850

1950pro

4650 not much more, but more based on those charts

that is total system draw and you need to pay more attention to the system being used because they are completely different. the 4650 system has an overclocked I7 in it. a 4650 and even 4670 uses less power than an x1950pro.

Thanks bunch folks!

I ended up finding a 9600 GSO for $41 after rebate on the Egg, so I went for it. It'll be a good fit for this PC, and will allow me to keep a few $$ set aside for my new rig purchase.

You can't cross reference benchmarks like that. One is a stock core 2 extreme, one is an i7 at 3.8.....

Excellent choice ! You'll be able to reuse the card as a PhysX add-on card in future builds too, if you're into it. And that price is really low too 🙂

That was a good purchase because the 9600 GSO is much better than the x1950 Pro.
