Receiving TV broadcasts via antenna

Yesterday I finally got on the HDTV bandwagon and received my 32" LCD. It's awesome and I love it, but my reception is questionable. Thing is, I'm just using the antenna from my old TV. When I first hooked it up and did a channel search, I found a bunch of channels and was able to watch them with almost no problems. They looked great and I had very few problems.

Later that night, though, I tried tuning in again and I could barely get any signal at all. One channel worked for a few minutes, then completely cut out... then when I tried again 20 minutes later, a different channel worked for a few seconds before breaking up, and again none of the other channels came in at all.

Do I need a special antenna or something? What can I do to get decent reception? The problem, I think, is that I'm on the ground floor of an apartment building in a city, so not much comes in. But it's still weird that it seemed to work earlier but then it completely stopped working later that day.

I don't watch enough TV to justify $40-$60 a month for cable or satellite, though I suppose there's always basic cable. Does Basic give you anything in HD? How can I even buy it? Comcast, of course, only has premium cable available, which I don't care about. They mention basic cable in their FAQ but they don't sell it, which makes me think it's either something they hide and you have to call them and demand it in order to get it, or it's handled through a different company.

tl;dr How do I improve my TV signal through antenna and how do I buy basic cable.
