receiving a wireless connection with a router?

So I know plenty about computers but networking I do not know much about. I just moved into a house with a few friends (college) and we are setting up a wireless network. I have a desktop and an XboX 360 - neither of which have wireless capability yet. Instead of dropping close to $200 on a top of the line wireless card for my pc and the wireless adapter for the 360 (if I'm going to spend money I'm going to get a good N card) could I just use a wireless router that I already own to pick up the signal and connect to each device through LAN ports on the back of it? I think this is what an access point allows you to do but the device I'm talking about is definitely a router. Is this even feasible?

I know the router is an older D-Link but I do not know the model number. I could maybe find out if someone needs to know but it's not currently in my possession and won't be for a few days.

I appreciate the help.

1. D-Link Routers do not work as Clients, and can be flashed with 3rd party firmware.

2. There are No good N cards, and even if there was one it is Not going to solve your problem.

Buy this Router Flash it with DD-WRT (free 3rd party firmware), configure it to work as a client and plug the computer and the X-Box to the switch ports.

wait can or can't?

If they can shouldn't I try that before spending money on a new router?

Sorry, they can NOT be flashed.

I.e. you have to buy something else.

ah ok I figured it was a typo since it wouldn't make sense to tell me to buy something else when I could use what I already had haha.

I went ahead and bought the buffalo and I'll return here if I can't get it figured out on my own. Thanks for the advice and the helpful links/info. I really appreciate it!
