Receiver with the most digital inputs???

Just curious as to which receiver has the most HDMI inputs and optical audio inputs.

What else to look for to 'future-proof' my AV receiver purchase?

I don't know if this is the most, but Sony has the 5300 with 6 HDMI inputs and 5 digital optical inputs.

That said, number of inputs wouldn't really be on my list of most important things to look for in futureproofing.

How many sources are you planning on connecting?

If you ever run out of inputs, you can just add a switch to your system to get you more inputs.

Things like better video processing, auto audio calibration, etc. would be things on my list rather than having a few more HDMI inputs when I know I could add on a <$100 switch later that would give me the added connectivity.

Yoyo, can you point me to good RELIABLE articles/reviews for the Sony 5300 in terms of video processing and other priorities you mentioned?

I was also going to read up on Onkyo 705/805.

I foresee connecting:
1. hd-dvd
2. blu-ray
3. htpc with hdmi out
4. whatever is next-gen game console

Well here's a CNET link if you want to look at that.

As for how it really compares with the other options in the pricerange from Denon / Onkyo etc, I'd go to AVSforum and look around.

unless your willing to wait another 6 months+ to get a standalone Blu Ray player that is worth buying, then jsut go out and get a PS3. excellent player, and more stable than any other on the market. that takes care of 2 and 4 on your list 😉

I'm going to wait out till the format wars dust settles so #2 will be a question mark for a while.

For now, I'm sticking with hd-dvd as I have Toshiba A2 free from one of my wife's rewards accounts program.
