I recently hooked up my 2 new floor speakers (Klipsch Icon 6 1/2" 2 Way Speakers. Model#KF26) with my new receiver (Sony 945W 7.1 channel 3D Pass-through. Model#STRDH520). I am using 16 gauge speaker cable. I have the receiver setup for only the front left and right speakers, but it seems most sounds is coming from the front left speaker. Also, when movie scene or tv gets loader the receiver will just shut off. I'm not sure if I have a short somewhere or what the issue is.

The first thing to check is if the speaker polarities are correct. i.e. - are you absolutely sure the leads go red to red and black to black?

i had that issue with a yamaha receiver years ago and had to send it in to get fixed. i believe it had something to do with a fuse inside but not 100% about that.

I will have to confirm the wires are connected correctly, but I am fairly confident that they are.

Never mind the polarity check. Check your speaker wire on the right Its possibly shorted or your right speaker is defective. Switch the cables from right to left and see of the problem switches side. If it does its a bad cable. If it does not then switch the speakers around. If the problem goes to the left you have a bad speaker. If not you have a receiver issue.

Very likely a strand from of one of the cables is shorting somewhere. Try unhooking everything then hook it back up again being careful to make sure the bare wire ends are neatly twisted.

If it's the speaker you may just have a lose connection to one of the drivers or crossover. Which if you don't mind unscrewing and pulling out the drivers to check could be a simple fix.

So I Returned the receiver for an identical model and it seems to have fixed the problem with the receiver shutting off when a loud scene comes on. However I am still having the issue of one speaker being louder than the other. I have switched each speaker to the other side and it always seems to be the same one. I'm thinking there may be an issue with one of the speakers. Any advice or should I just return the one speaker for a new one?

Going all new can be a pain sometimes. I am assuming you don't have any other stereos in the house? If the sound problem is following the same speaker, then it sounds like you are narrowed down to speaker or cable.

The simple trouble shooting procedure I gave you would have identified the bad speaker very quickly and would have saved you the hassle of exchanging that receiver for no good reason.

To sum it up,

YES return the speaker and get another one, actually, if they come in matched pairs, exchange both speakers.
