receiver or speakers

Ok here's the deal.... I have a nice set of surround sound speakers that have not been able to sell to get money to buy good PC speakers with. So i was wondering if it would be better to just get a receiver for the speakers i have and use the optical digital out on my sound card (audigy 2) with the speakers i have or keep trying to sell them. (i can buy the reciever from a friend cheeper than good PC speakers) Thanks for your inputs!

PS sorry for the bad grammer in advance to long of a day at work burried under Technical Orders!

Do you have an nforce2 with soundstorm for audio? If not, you actually need a receiver with 5.1 analog input, not digital. Only soundstrom will create a Dolby 5.1 signal from game audio and send it over the digital out, everything else will only send stereo over the digital out.

eCost was selling the Onkyo TXSR-501 receiver with 5.1 analog in for about $150 (refurbished), in case your friend's receiver doesn't have multichannel analog in. You'll also need 3 miniplug -to- 2 RCA y-cables for the 6 analog channels.

I'd get the receiver. You can get all the associated cabling to run the 6 discrete analog ouputs (recommended to do this instead of optical) from Parts Express for under $30.

hey im in a similar situation and was looking for some advice. i have a pioneer 5.1 reciever but need new speakers (the cones in my pioneer floorspeakers are somewhat dry rotted) but i want to know if it would be easier just to get a nice set of computer speakers or spending the money on speakers for my reciever
