Receiver doesn't support HDMI

Hey guys, I have a 5 year old Pioneer receiver that I brought to the college dorm but it only has component, optical, and coaxial inputs (along with the usual RCA fare).

My roomate brought his Xbox 360 along with his 52" LCD TV that has 3 HDMI inputs. Thats more than enough inputs for me. The problem is we dug around to find that his TV will NOT pass through Dolby Digital and DTS signals through HDMI to its Optical out in the back but instead downmixes the audio to stereo, thus the receiver defaults to Pro Logic mode.

The TV will pass Dolby Digital as long as it is not coming through HDMI. Which means our cable works fine, its just his Xbox and PS3 that's the problem.

I know they exist but I haven't been able to find the little device. I'm looking for the little box that takes an HDMI input signal and extracts the audio and puts it out through optical or coaxial while passing the video on through the HDMI connector on to the TV.

Anyone know where I can find these or know a recommendation of what kind to get? I checked monoprice and cables4less but it was a no-go.

Can't you just hook up from the outputs of the consoles directly to the receiver with digital optical or toslink?

He doesn't have the AV-link cable and it only supports stereo out. Other than that the Xbox has an HDMI connector. There's no coaxial or optical outs on the unit. It's one of the newest Jasper consoles if that means anything.

There is a dongle you need that provides left/right analog audio and toslink for the 360. No other way.

PS3 - just use the optical out.

That does look good, but will I be able to have the HDMI connector in the back of the console along with the dongle connected for the optical out? I know some devices will only output to one device at a time and I dont know how the xboxes are.

The Xbox can do HDMI video and Optical Audio, they even state this in the manual here.

Note the 3rd bullet on the page "Optical/RCA Audio adapter included for non-HDMI supported stereo systems"

But yes, you NEED that adapter, or the component cables and use the optical out on that.

And it looks like you need that special adapter because Microsoft in their infinite wisdom manufactured the xbox so that the other adapter actually covers up the HDMI port on it so you need the special one to output optical and HDMI at the same time.

I have an 80gig PS3 on the way that should be about $210 after rebates and stuff but my experience with these consoles up until this point it hooking up a friend's 360 to my system once.

The PS3 works much the same way. You just have to plug in the HDMI and tell it you want audio via optical. I do it sort of backwards. I use HDMI for audio and Component for Video on my PS3 since my TV in the bedroom doesn't have HDMI, only component. (old CRT 1080i).

Actually what I did was break apart the plastic housing on the Component cables with a screwdriver. Removed that and it had room to plug in the HDMI cable.

Bringing a 50 inch TV in a dorm room isn't really a good idea

It'd be a better idea if it's a suite type, and your roommate is a friend, not a stranger you met when you moved in

Its a 4-person apartment like situation. And it's not my TV> I'd never be able to afford crap like that in college :p

I wonder if your tv can output the stream directly via optical out (if it has one) to your reciever

CONSOLE ->HDMI-> TV

TV -> OPTICAL OUT -> RECIEVER

But It will depend on the tv, whether or not it lets you bitstream through

Maybe? eh?

Otherwise go with what hte above suggested

Yeah, as I said in the OP it will pass the stream via optical but only in stereo. HDMI will only pass the audio in stereo. If I receive the Dolby Digital signal through the coaxial it will pass it through the optical but any audio through HDMI is downmixed to stereo. Dont know why, but the Sony manual even states it. It really sucks.
