received the Bold 9700 today and I'm very satisfied

I received it when I got home from work today. I really like the outer design and the keyboard.
I am using my wireless network at home and using the carrier data plan everywhere else. I set up my gmail + work emails and I get push emails with notification. I downloaded pandora, weather app, businessweek, AP news, google map, poynt, and some other apps. These are all the apps that I really need... I have a friend who has an iphone and 85% of the apps are pure waste of time. I don't care for games or my horoscopes or if the app can read my mind with a series of questions.
I am perfectly content with the screen size and the internet browsing experience on it. I am quite satisfied with it even though it gets bashed like crazy on this site. That's all I wanted to say.

People here can't seem to grasp that it's ok to like a Blackberry and there's nothing wrong with it.

+1 I heart my Curve 8900, never let me down and the battery lasts for 2 days if I want.

I was cool with everything until you said you were fine with the internet browsing.

Internet browsing on the BB sucks, but the other apps are ok.

The reason why BB gets bashed is because:

1: Their phones still cost $200. No way it costs the same as a DroidX/EVO/Galaxy S, etc.
2: Few Apps
3: All work and no play
4: BB has seen the slowest progression

But if you're happy with it, then that's all that matters. I'm just giving your reasons why its not highly looked upon.

If you're on an office Exchange system (BES), you'll be paying RIM a $180.00/year premium on top of your regular data plan for the same "push" email that could have been included as part of the basic data plan on most other smartphones...

But being happy with your purchase is the most important thing. :)

You'll be getting OS6, too, so Browsing will be MUCH better shortly.

I'm surprised it took 3 posts before someone bashed BBs, it's normally instant.

I've been using BIS on mine as we don't have a BES at work. It works fine for me.

You only pay extra for BES if your work uses BES. You can connect to a regular Exchange server through BIS.

There are less expensive ways around that, too.

I've had my Blackberry Bold 9700 for nearly a year and I've also been confused about all the bashing. At work I'm surrounded by iPhones and Droids. The only thing I can see that the iPhone really does better is video games, and I couldn't give two shits about video gaming on my phone. Actually, their browsers are substantially quicker, but that will be fixed with the upcoming Webkit browser.

Would I trade either of those things for the simpler interface, messaging and texting capabilities or the kick ass keyboard? No way.

What it comes down to is that many iPhone and Droid users try to define their lives by the phone they carry. I find that odd, though, since the original Droid is easily the ugliest, mass marketed smartphone ever made. Blackberry users are often just looking for the right tool to make their lives better.

This sums it up pretty well...coming from a droidx owner :)

I wouldn't buy a BB at this point given my circumstances, but I don't think they're nearly as bad as WinMo got (especially pre 6.5) or worthy of bashing.

The 9700 is a good phone, great keyboard, battery life, reception, etc...

But I don't know if I could go back to not having a touchscreen. The keyboard isn't as effective, but everyhting else is much quicker to access on a touchscreen.

True, if there was one thing that I would add to the Bold 9700 it would be be a >3.2" touch screen. I'm hoping the Torch 9800 leads to bigger and better things from BB as long as they don't stray too far from their core.

I think BB phones are ok. With the new OS 6 it's polishing up some rough areas, but it's still not quite there yet, according to the Torch review.

BBs are nice for messages and business, but as of now, even with the torch, all other media functions are lacking. The hardware on the torch is better, but it's only caught up to 2008-09 phones.

Android is rumored to have dual core beasts soon.

I'm not sure what dual core Androids has to do with this thread.

Because we're talking about hardware. You think dual core androids has nothing to do with BB?

A dual core Android compared to the lackluster hardware performance of the Torch, as an offshoot from a discussion Bold 9700? How long until someone compares those dual core Androids to the iPhone?

This kind of jumping from one semi-related subject to another to another is how threads in GG&P get so ridiculously off topic.

It's still on topic so don't worry about it. A torch is a BB, so I don't see a problem.

You complaing about what is on/off topic is off topic.

Back on course. My buddy has a 9700, and sometimes I feel like I miss BB's.

Ok that doesn't make sense because nothing needed to be addressed about being off topic in the first place, but whatever.

Anyway I'm glad the OP is happy with his BB. Maybe the reasons why BBs gets bashed is because of the points I stated. The OP brought up the BB bashing himself, I offered some reasons why that may be.

Also, TMobile's BB's support UMA, you can make calls over WiFi
#1 thing I miss about my BlackBerry. It's incredibly useful in areas with weak or no T-Mo signal - if you can find an open WiFi network, you still have service.
I kept an old Pearl and I throw it in my bag when traveling if I am worried about cell coverage. I really hope my next Android phone has UMA capability.

Those new BBs look pretty, just wish more had no camera versions.

I love my Blackberry Bold 9700. Very compact and pocketable phone that has great battery life (enough to last a whole weekend) and there's something about Blackberries that just offers me some comfort of "reliable email" for my work (BES) and personal (Gmail and the like). Plus I love the keyboard (I'm honestly not that great with virtual keyboards). I've had a lot of "high-end" smartphones like iPhones (3GS and prior) and Android phones (Evo 4G, Hero, etc.) that I've used in tandem with my Blackberry 9700 but when it comes down to just bringing one phone with me when I go out to dinner or what-not I always just grabbed the 9700.

I got a Torch 9800 last night from a launch event and its pretty sweet thus far. Quite a solid phone (has a nice heft to it...weighs about the same as a 4.3" Evo 4G even though this Torch is only 3.2 touchscreen). Love the well-roundedness of the phone in terms of User-interaction like physical keyboard + capacitive touchscreen in a portrait slider form-factor. Anyways to each his own some people love the multimedia + games available on iPhone + Android but for me Blackberry works well for communicating/messaging.

What's the battery life like? I'm curious as to how significant, if at all, the effects of OS6 will be. The engadget review was positive about it, but I always like hearing from non-review sources.
