that had my name and it said that someone was filing a claim for a car accident that I had with them on May 17th. The thing is that I haven't been in an accident and secondly haven't been in that area where the accident was claimed. The insurance csr asked me if I owned a 2008 Mercedes. I said no. She said she was going to forward this to investigation and she is going to find out more in a month...

Forward to today. I received a letter from another insurance company that gave me instructions on who to call to take a look at "my car" that was involved in the accident and about renting cars. Allegedly my "2008 Benz" was involved in the accident and that was my insurance company. Unfortunately they were closed today so I have to call them Monday morning and explain I don't own a 2008 Benz I checked my credit report to see if anyone bought a car with my name but don't see anything.

Cliff notes
Received letter at my house claiming I own a 2008 benz and was in an accident
Don't have a Benz
Called police department and somehow my name pops up as the "owner" on the registration of the Benz on the police report

Anyone have any idea how this mixup could have happened? is it fraud or just an accident?

Sounds pretty strange, but that kind of stuff happens. I got a letter in the mail about a parking ticket that I didn't pay. The ticket was from a city I have never been to though. When I called them they said that the plate number was registered in my name (and the plate number is actually from my car), but after talking to them they said that the vehicle in question was a white nissan SUV. The plate is on a green infiniti though, so after some investigation, they dismissed the ticket.

Could be either, but if somebody has a car registered in your name it would be interesting to see if you can sell it. It doesn't sound like they used your credit to buy it, so you shouldn't get stuck with the bill.

I bet most likely somebody wrote down the wrong plate though.
