I recently got a bottle of this as a gift. I know X.O. is premium grade cognac (aged at least 20-25 years) and know it is on the expensive side, so I want to enjoy it a bit more.

Should I drink this straight up, or mix it with other things? Also, I haven't consumed brandy/cognac in a while, does it go bad after opening it?

I think good cognac is supposed to be slowly heated before drinking.
And DONT mix it. If it is fine stuff you want it as is.

this reminds me of a thread about marinating steaks the other day. I believe this example was mentioned at least once.

cognac is a type of brandy, distilled from white wine in cognac, france. I've never had it either, but I guess it's like brandy *shrug*

Exactly right! Also, don't forget to blow smoke in the face of the biggest nearby arrogant blowhard and one-up whatever he brags about. So, if he has a Viper, say you have a Porsche.. It's easy.

Cognac is awesome though.. Just make sure you get a big phat-ass sifter.. Good ones are fvcking huge (and you only fill about 1/2" to 3/4" high) and they're heavy and made out of crystal.

Cigar is a mandatory.. preferably a light mild cigar so as not to detract from the Cognac..

EDIT: As for Cognac sifters, I like these. They're casual enough to serve as your whiskey glass, plain enough for wine, and large enough for Cognac.. Also, they're modern. A heavy crystal sifter won't do you much good if you don't drink Cognac often.

Ok... so the second part of the question is:

Can Cognac go bad once opened?

It's like brandy, well... in a way, it sorta is brandy. Just a better version of brandy!

no, it doesn't go bad,

at ruth chris steak house, you can get a shot of napolean cognac for over $100? correct me if i'm wrong.

also a good cognac can be used as a form of investment.

edit: it's actually Louis XIII

Remy Martin's Louis XIII is sometimes called the "King of Cognacs" and is certainly one of the most esteemed liquors in the world. It was what Queen Elizabeth II was served when she visited France, what Churchill drank to celebrate his election as prime minister and what Tom Cruise and Bryan Brown wagered in the movie Cocktail.

Louis XIII is bottled in a Baccarat crystal decanter and retails for upwards of $1,500 per bottle. The extravagant price represents a great investment of time and effort, as three generations of Remy's cellarmasters craft more than 3,000 blends before it's bottled. This assures the Cognac's complexity and character, while preventing it from being copied.

Thanks Pepsei, I just wanted to confirm it wasn't like wine when opened :)
