Reccommendation for typical router?

I have been using the same router for about 13 years, a Linksys WRT54G.

I think its time I upgrade or replace it. Over time, electronic equipment does fail just from use. I just had a modem start to fail, coincidentally same time a computer failed. For weeks trying to figure out why a new comp system, about 6 years newer than old, could barely download torrents, and not even have internet access while downloading. All came down to the modem. Once replaced, everything it back the way it should be. So - I want to avoid an inevitable problems and replace my aging router. And I might be having a degradation of service right now, and not know it.

What are the current recommendations? I don't just want to walk into a Staples or a Best Buy and just buy whatever they have on the shelf.

I have heard of routers that have two different wireless networks, one for "in-house" and one for guests, I do not know the terminology, and I believe I would be interested in that feature.

Currently I have:

Wireless: 1-2 tablets, occasionally a laptop, and smartphone guests on wireless.
Wired: Computer, gaming console, and a VOIP router (Vonage).

Future: I am researching if NAS would be helpful. I plan to rebuild old computer and put it on a network that will be involved in a large media scanning project. I would like the scans to be accessible by a few people over the internet (this maybe comes under a NAS project), so they can do retouching and tagging.

I am also interested in streaming from computer to a TV, not sure how I will do it in the future, but if there is a particular feature of a router that is applicable, I'd like that also.

Buy a DD-WRT compatible router to achieve dual SSIDs (two wireless connections)
You can create one wireless network for your guests and one for your family. Family members will be able to "see" each other in the network and share files and resources while guests can only browse the internet. Cool and safe... 🙂
