Not sure whether im looking for 2.1 or 5/6.1, but hopefully i can get some help with that also. What i'm looking for is a pair of speakers that will go loud without distortion, pump out good, tight bass but without sounding boomy.

Most of what i would use it for will be music, so i'm not really worried about surround sound for gaming, but if i have to i would go to a 5.1 set providing a noticible difference in sound quality.

sofar i've looked at some of the creative z-680s and z-640s, as well as a few klipsch models. can anyone help to point me in the right direction?

according to Maximum PC (great magazine) they say the best speakers are as follows:

2.1: Klipsch GMX A-21

4.1: Logitech Z-560

5.1: Logitech Z-680

7.1: Creative Labs 7.1 Gigaworks S750

Hope this helps

For 2.1, Klipsch Promedia 2.1.
For 5.1, same thing. Klipsch Promedia.

The Promedia's are better sounding than GMX series.

Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1. Spend the extra cash, they are the best, and are worth every penny.

My brother and me both have logitech 2.1 speakers (he has the Z-3 I think and I have some X-220 for my old rig) and I must say they are very bass-heavy. Even at the lowest bass setting the bass is very strong. My brother is a drum'n'bass DJ by the way and if he thinks that the bass is too heavy...
I am quite pleased with my old Creative Inspire 5.1 5300 and i also think that the new Creative 5.1 speakers (the ones for >$100) that a friend of mine has sound very good.

Logitech speakers are like that. Lots of bass, not much in sound quality. Klipsch Promedia have a *much* better sound.

I have the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1s and they are great. I just don't need a surround setup for my comp. I have also heard from a number of people and places that the GMX series are not as good as the ProMedia series. So if you are looking for 2.1 speakers I highly recommend the ProMedia 2.1s.

Forget computer speakers and look towards the Klipsch home theater speakers. Best Buy recently had a 25% off sale on them and i got a pair of the SF-2 tower speakrs for like $187.50 each. These things are a ton better than the promedias. Of course you need alot of room and also a reciever. But the SF-2 towers are just amazing for the price.
