reccommend a car for my future bro-in-law?

factory certified used is option, but warranty is pretty important. Reliability and crash ratings important.

Right now he's thinking Honda Civic, but his man card really would prefer something more SUV-like (He seems to want the option "It'll be just like camping" of sleeping in the back of the car. My sister is not exactly thrilled by this.) Personally, with my knowledge, I'd say civic, but I thought I'd run it by you car buffs and see what you had to say.

He's acutally a great guy - I didn't actually price cars, I just assumed you could get a civic for about $200/mo.

The length is not a problem, though $1k down would be a plus. He just can't afford more than that until he lands a job (fresh out of school).

Oh, sorry - He is thinking leasing, not buying if that helps.

My recommendation would be for him to pick up a used volvo 850 96 or later.

Awsome cars. He can pick one up for about 9500 cash with a turbo.

He is currently applying for gov't position but won't know for sure for months.

His parents have offered to pick up the tab until he lands a job, but they specified <$200 which is why he is stuck with that.

That would certainly meet my requirements for safety and coolness but I don't know about reliability with the turbo (though volvos tend to be tanks in the reliability aspect)

The one I have has managed to total two other vehcieles in its lifetime. Both vheicles had frame damage. I was not the one driving at the time.

As far as the 'brick' I haven't even had to get the hood repaired. Just bumper work and headlight assembly.

Edit and the other two smucks were deamed at fault.
