Reccomendations for summer work...? (minneapolis, MN, however very open ended questions inside)

Ok, brief history:

19 years old
Male
3+ years of retail sales and customer service
Last summer i worked as a private "consultant" and charged 20$/hr to do computer service/maintinance and netowrking stuff (going rate around here is like 30-50 so people went with me cause im cheap). That was too much work though, plus if i make more than 2000$ i need to register as a small business or somethin, so that is out of the question, cause taxes will eat me alive.

I was thinking of a tech store, like best buy or compusa or computer city or maybe even microcenter if i dont have other options.

I talked to a bbuy rep, they said that they love hiring people who have the kind of sales experience as i do, however there is no way im going to work for 6.50 an hour to sell computers, im worth more than that crap..

any suggestions or ideas that i could employ in my job search?

again, im from the Minneapolis area, so any help in that dept would be more than welcome :)

Thx guys.

If you think you're going to make money like that again this summer, try again. The job market here in Minneapolis is crap. A couple years ago I was making $60K/yr as a developer in St. Cloud. Now I'm making 2/3 that much as a lead software developer here in Minneapolis. Right now, you're lucky to find something in the tech sector at all. You take what you can get.

no sorry, not a coder :(

Im more of the tech support (hardware/software) with experience in all the windows versions. I also do some graphic design..

maybe even an intership would be good for me, get some hands on learning with coding, but not have stuff rely soley on me... hmm... if i was an intern i bet my rents would help me with my money, maybe that is an option as well.

Look for an internship. But I'll warn you right now, the IT intern market in the Minneapolis area sucks. I was lucky the company I worked for last summer had an open intern position again this summer, because nothing else was panning out. But interships can be fairly highly paid, as long as you can find one. One other word of warning as well, it will be even harder to find an internship in IT in the Minneapolis area because they seem to be fairly competitive, and while you have done some self-employed work, it may be difficult to get a position without some actual IT experience or some college experience in a related field. Are you in college and if so, what field?

I agree with Fett. The tech market really stinks in Minneapolis right now. I'm trying to find a better job than the one I currently have and am really struggling. You might try the Geek Squad. They do tech support for home/business use. They're popular and I'm sure difficult to get in with. If you did get in though, you'd get to drive around a black and white Beetle with Geek Squad painted on the doors :p. You might also try registering with some tech temp firms. Those are really my only thoughts for ya. Hope that helps!

Good Luck

I'm not sure of the city...it is a brand new area with like 8 buildings. I want to say it is in Columbia Heights, but it may be Fridley or something. it is off of 694 and Highway 65 (central Ave.) They have in-house security, so if you call over at a general number, i'm sure they could get you in touch with someone.

it was a while ago, but i'm sure they have the same turnover that most security does. I checked into them before i left MN which was about two years ago though. But private security has such a huge turnover, that most companies won't turn away a good prospect.

oh i know :)

what has been known to work tho for some of my friends, is they just commit their time over break periods and claim they will stay for a couple of years as long as the pay is good.

Worked for a friend of mine that does that type of work for general mills

if you want that, check out the armored car companies in the area. They are usually hiring and pay pretty well. overtime too.
