Reccomendations for a budget A/V reciever & speakers? (EDIT: difference between Onkyo HTR510 & TX-SR501?)

My little (and old) bookshelf stereo is on its way out, and right now my DVD player is hooked straight to my TV with its tiny speakers. So after Christmas I'd like to start looking for a reciever & speakers. I'll probably be on a tight budget though, so the less I have to spend, the better. Not that I'm looking for cheap crap, just bang for the buck. I might be able to get away with just a stereo reciever; I don't know what good a surround system would do since I can't hear in surround - I'm deaf in one ear 😛 . Then again, I don't think I've ever actually heard a well-designed, properly-set-up surround system either, so who knows? Either way, I'm thinking of, for now, just getting the reciever and the front speakers, and spending a couple hundred bucks tops. Any suggestions?

EDIT: Well, if I get anything, it'll probably be one of the two Onkyo amps linked to in this thread. Speakers probably from HTD. Can someone tell me what the difference is between the two amps though? They look identical, except for power rating, but the higher-powered one is actually cheaper. What gives?

EDIT #2: looks like the HTR510 might be the reciever from one of their HTIB packages - something that they don't normally sell as a stand-alone.

Interesting...too bad the sale's only for another day or two. I'll have to keep an eye on that website though; thanks for the link.

Anybody else?

Nate, it has been that price for quite some time, and it always says it is ending in a few days. It'll still be there for awhile. 🙂

I would recommend a different receiver. It is here

Onkyo HTR510

It's from the same place and it's what I have right now. From what I've read in the past etc, the only differences I see is the 501 is 65w x 6 and the 510 can do 100w x 6

For cheap speakers, Fluance is an excellent value.

I'm currently running 2 Fluance 42" speakers and the Onkyo receiver that murphy55d recommended. The sound quality is very good for what I paid... now I just need the rest of the speakers for the 6.1.

hometheaterdirect.com Look at level one for a budget system.

They aren't earth shattering, but for the price, they are very nice.

Neat site. Have you (or anyone else here, for that matter) ever used any of their speakers? Level ones or otherwise.

have herd good things about fluance speakers, they're very inexpensive. check 'em out on cnet's site. someone needs to buy these and let me know if they're any good.

look 2 posts up - somebody is using them 😛

The fluance speakers look nice, but I don't have room for floor-standing speakers right now. This stuff is first going into my bedroom; later maybe a small apartment or family room once I move out. The bookshelf-size speakers on the HTD site are more along the lines of what I'd be looking for.

For a dvd player with digital audio output running in a bedroom, a Logitech Z680 system is all you need.

another interesting option...guess I could use the AM/FM tuner and CD player part of my old bookshelf system with these, if I wanted to; it's the speakers on it that are going to pot.

I have level I hometheaterdirect speakers and they are probably better than any speaker Fluance makes. Even the magnets are made out of cardboard on those things...

If that's true, then why is it even cheaper than the 501? from the model #, I would assume that it's about the same age.

OK - at this point, it looks like (if I do end up getting anything) I'm going to get the Onkyo TX-SR501 - 65W is good enough for a small room, isn't it? - and a set of speakers from HTD. If I could find it on sale, I'd like to get my hands on one of the new panasonic digital amps, like the SA-XR25 - specs similar to the onkyo, good sound from the reports that I've seen (been digging around on AVSforum.com) and they're considerably smaller & cooler. Oh well, can't have everything.

bump again. Maybe somebody can explain this to me. Doesn't look like there's any difference, but I might be missing something.
