Reccomendation for DVD-R drive to buy...

I need a recc. for a recordable DVD drive to buy, and also a few questions.

For a long time there were multiple DVD-R formats, something like DVD-R, DVD+R, bla bla bla. Has this sorted itself out now / is there a standard / better format / type of drive to buy?

Do 'mkisofs' and 'burncd'/'cdrecord' work for DVDs also? All the CD burning is done in FreeBSD so this is pretty important.

What's the largest DVD discs I can write to? 5.7gb? Are larger recordable DVDs coming out anytime soon?
