I'm thinking to upgrade my ram now... because in a month or so I'll switch to an n-force 2 board, and this ram cant do any OC-ing, any reccomendations on a cheap 512 stick? can that Kreton ram handle dual channel that's like $69 on newegg? I also need something DDR400... Since there's a good chance I'm gonna go w/ a athlon 64 as well...... any help would be appreciated, thanks

I just bought some Geil PC4000 512MB DDR for my P4 because a lot of people on here like it and it is the best overclocker out of lots of high end memory.

that's out of my price range of what I wanna spend on ram :(.... $142 on newegg for 2 256's... I'm pretty much looking for something that's capable to do OC'ing easy for my 2400 for now so I can run it @ 333... and then when I get the nforce I plan on running default speeds but @ cas-2

How about Buffalo 3200? That should work well, though I'm not 100% sure it can always do CAS-2. You may want to get some other opinions first.

Another good choice is Buffalo 3700, but that's obviously a bit more $.

Runs 11-3-3-2 @ DDR400 speeds for me. Don't worry about dual channel on an Athlon unless you're using integrated graphics.

Just so it's clear - I didn't see it anywhere, and the one line "any reccomendations on a cheap 512 stick" prompted me to post this:
You do need two sticks of RAM to run in dual-channel mode.

I've got the Geil PC3200 value RAM from Newegg - I bought it months ago, when it was cheap, like $69 a stick for the 512MB stuff. Now it's over $80, go figure. I don't do much FSB overclocking, because my various components never seem to like it - even with the PCI lock on my nForce2's, over 200FSB always gives a variety of BSOD's. Memtest86 always passes just fine though. Again -

can windows ME really take advantage of over 512 though? ..... that 1gig hyperX kit seems to be a good deal...

OMG! Do yourself a favor and get rid of WinME!

IMHO, you should do that before upgrading anything else in your system.

If you can't get WinXP (which I would recommend), at least move up to Win2K.

That will make a bigger overall real-world difference than the RAM will...

I tried XP...... it just doesn't seem all to much faster... and the other problem is some of the patches for older games I play don't work on XP, like rainbow six.... but I think i will try to go w/ 2k

so you think the 512 hyperX for $90 is a good deal?

If you didn't notice that XP is better in every way than ME, either you didn't use it long enough or you weren't paying attention.
ME is the WORST OS ever perpetrated on the general public.

But you already know that:

can windows ME really take advantage of over 512 though?

I don't see how a game will run on ME and not XP... Usually it's the other way around...

$90 is not bad right now. RAM isn't really cheap, especially for PC3200. But I think 2 for $176 is better...

its the way they programmed the patch..... they did a pretty poor job.... I think I'll go w/ the $90 unless I can find win2k in a day or so

Sorry to hear that about the game.

If you stay with ME, 512M will do you fine...
