Keep in mind that often, smaller breeds are often "barkers" or "annoying little barky-dogs" as I call them. You don't want to piss off your neighbors w/a little barky dog.

Good luck though. :)

Well how small are you talking about? Any specific weight? Also, what do you want it to do, or want it for?

I have a small Beagle and he's a great apartment dog. Only problem I have is Beagles tend to howl when you're not there. I've tried to train my dog not to do this but he still does sometimes so I've gotten a few complaints.

I prefer "useless little rat dogs". If you're going to get a pet, get a DOG. Preferably something that will do damage when you yell "Go get 'em".

We have a Boston Terrier and he was AWESOME in our apartment.

Great dogs and VERY smart. You can see some pics of him (his name is Milhouse) here. (BTW, don't blame me for the sweater pics, that was my wife's idea).

My brother has a boston terrier. It is an ugly dog, ugly enough to be cute. He is also fiercely loyal, which is a good thing for a dog. :)

Beagles are a good size/yapping ratio. Usually the smaller the dog, the more the yapping. Beagles come in three sizes, the medium size is about 13" high.

Mine is an outside dog, and he never howls when we're gone. He will bark at us if we're there and outside, but that's the extent of his barking.

Besides, how can you turn down a puppy as cute as this :).

Some beagle downsides. They can't be open fed (gotta give them food once a day, no automatic feederss, beagles will eat until they explode). Like all dogs, they will mine a catbox for "treasures". They're hard (not impossible) to train, most will housetrain fine, but will ignore "come" "sit" or "stay". You can't have them outside off a leash, because once they find a smell, they'll follow it forever (I think once their nose turns on, their ears turn off:D). They really don't do tricks (mine will sit, but only if he thinks there is a treat in it for him) either.

They are however, one of the most loyal dogs you can get and they're GREAT with kids. Beagles love everyone equally.

Find a good breeder (if you're in the NW Ohio / SE Michigan area, I can direct you to one where I know he has pups still) and do some reading about beagles before you get one. They're great dogs, just a little different :D

You mean you want a pet rat? ;) I guess you can go w/ those deformed Chinese dogs.

I'd go w/ a beagle. The only semi-small dog I could ever like.

Wife could not be without her cocker spaniels.

They have worked out great in the 2 & 3 bedroom apartments.

corn-dogs are the best dogs for apts.
they are really quiet. come in bags of 24.
tasty when you are lonely.
will listen to you for hours.
very clean (unless you are a messy cook/eater)
the ideal apt dog...
