Preferably Dark or Spiced Rum. Thus far my experience is limited to Captain Morgan's Parrot Bay and Cruzan Black Strap, and I much prefer the latter.

I'd like to experiment, but this shit is expensive. Any recs for the top shelf stuff?

Mount Gay Extra old.

PS: Appleton Estates Extra 12 Year Old is quite good, too.

For mixing, I buy Cruzan most of the time. Don't drink it straight, so I can't help you with the good stuff.

Mt. Gay is good but if you can find it Cockspur Very Special Old Reserve is far superior for a good Bajan cane rum.

Sometimes it can be found marketed as Cockspur 12 Year Bajan Crafted. I had to go so far as making an in with the Canadian distributor out of Montreal to arrange a case or two to be available for me any time I'm in Quebec.

cool.

I forgot about El Dorado rum. They have some real nice aged rums.

i enjoy captain morgan very much. for the crap people give it, i have not had a better tasting spiced rum in the $20-35 price range. the black cask (100 proof) is also good. it's a bit more molasses-y though.

I go with Captain Morgan 100 for mixing with cola. It is $25 for a handle around here. I've found most silver rums to be similar for making mojitos. If you aren't mixing Mt Gay XO, as mentioned above, is quite nice.

How do you plan on drinking the rum?

Right now I'm drinking the BlackStrap on the rocks to get the most flavor out of it, but I'm not above mixing given a good recipe.

I can understand silver rum being better for mixing due to the more subdued flavor (at least in Captain Morgan's Parrot Bay).

Another vote for Kraken. A bit sweet with vanilla, great for mixing or enjoying on its own.

Pro Tip: If you have an icecream maker, use 2-4 shots of Kraken to make Vanilla Rum ice cream.

On another note, I've got quite the decent shopping list now. Advantage of being in a college town I've got half a dozen liquor stores within 1 mile to check out. New suggestions still welcome, thanks guys!

I second Zaya.

But if you want it to put hair on your chest, best not get anything except Captain Morgan Black.

I've always preferred Captain for some reason. Captain and 7up is usually my mixed drink of choice. It tastes like cream soda.

I like captain morgan's tattoo and sailor jerry strait and for mixing I'll go cheap and get McCormick brand, $13 for 1.75 liter, it's bottled in the KC area so it's local to me.

Puncheon. Or Demerara.

Any good ethnic food store in a large US city should sell them.

My favorite is flor de cana 7 year old rum. Its very good and you can taste the molasses from the sugar cane usedin manufacturing. Not a sweet rum but just good quality rum from Nicaragua. The 12 and 18 year old are even better. This has been my favorite rum for years now and I first tried it vacationing in Mexico. I usually drink it on the rocks and never mix it with coke etc... I also can't stand Capt Morgain or Bacardi but Flor de Cana is just delicious to me
