I have a relative who's finishing pharmacy school and she recommends fish oil as a good supplement, and notes that it should be pharmaceutical grade, free of mercury and other junk.

I'm looking for suggestions, I don't think we have the same stuff as they do in Australia.
Thanks

bulk suggestions welcome :Q But what is bulk fish oil anyways?...like 1 gallon? Pharmaceutical grade, not the cooking kind.

I've tried Rexall fish oil that I got from Wal-mart. It definitely has a fishy taste.

Now I've got Origin fish oil from Target (Origin is the generic Target brand). The fishy taste is not nearly as strong.

Both comes with about 200 capsules.

Also get yourself from flaxseed oil.

But do you guys know if the stuff you're getting is free of crap like mercury? That might kill the memory benefits...

I always did prefer flax seed oil to fish. But then I had 49erinnc recommend to me hemp oil. It has more Omega 3's, better shelf life, better tasting, and is cheaper. You can't beat that.

"Pharmaceutical grade" doesn't necessarily mean anything depending upon labelling requirements though the sentiment is correct. A more to the point specification is molecularly distilled. A major supplier of such brands theirs as MEG-3; so that is often used in labelling by the manufacturer and/or rebrander of the capsules. Indeed the same manufacturer may have their own brand while also supplying pharmacies with their own branding. So, prices can vary a lot for exactly the same thing.

If you try regular capsules and take them with food as recommended yet still experience intolerable fish burps then more costly enteric coated capsules are an option. They will disolve in the intestine so preclude such unpleasantness and reportedly allow for better absorbtion too.

Another affect on cost is concentration of the acids (EPA & DHA). So it may be possible that better value can be had by taking larger doses of oil having lower concentrations. In any case, find a product you like before committing to bulk.

Ye olde timey straight-up cod liver oil should be avoided as poison these days.

The nutrients in flax seed oil are significantly less than in the animal variety and worse must be converted by the body at a very innefficient ratio. So, while the hazards are avoided the benefits are relatively slim. I don't know anything about hemp oil but am intrigued if not too optimistic (guessing it falls betwixt flax and fish at best).

Costco has the enteric coated kind for a reasonable price. Something like eleven bucks for 200 capsules of 1700 mg of concentrated fish oil. Kirkland brand with the MEG-3 logo. "State-of-the-art molecular distillation is used to remove PCBs and dioxins which guarantees purity and potency. Mercury undetectable."

Someone here recommended in another thread that you can keep the bottle in the freezer and consume the non-coated ones frozen and it's supposed to reduce/eliminate the dreaded fish burps. I haven't tried it.

Make sure you get deep water fish (to avoid mercury). If it's deep water, you'll see it on the bottle somewhere. Carlsons and Biotest are both great brands for fish oil. You can find good prices on the net if you search for them. I recommend DPS nutrition or Bulk Nutrition.

For supplement advice you would be well off posting at Immortality Institute nutritional supplements forum (www.imminst.org). They've got their shit covered 100 times over. In fact you should probably just browse the topics, another fish oil thread would be wildly redundant.

1 gallon is not bulk :|

I ROFL'ed...damn, wtf is with all these "bulk" threads? First beef, then lube in the L&R forums, now fish oil. Interesting trifecta. Anyways...

Costco FTW!

I haven't tried many types (non-coated) but the fish burps have been virtually nil. I suppose it varies per individual and the food taken simultaneously. Freezing is an interesting notion but so storing for more than a short duration would be ill advised due to humidity at least (recall most meds and supplements are best kept cool 'n' dry).

Selecting deep water sources is more of a strategy than a safeguard. I would not rely upon it. Indeed, shallow water sources but which are lower on the food chain avoid the danger of bioaccumulation. In any case, choosing a distilled product precludes the risk.

Or any other brands that have at leat 500 combined EPA/DHA per 10 calories. One of the whole reasons to take fish omega over cheaper plant omega is that fish has the much better DHA and EPA oils, which are more needed by your body. Don't settle for anything less than the specs I gave you if you want your money's worth. Most other brands have the same listed amount of fish oil, bu the oil itself has less EPA/DHA. This includes all generic brands I've ever seen. The ones I listed aren't even really that expensive anyway, so...

Avoid washing your clothes with three of the fish oil capsules still inside your pocket. My roommate did that and hilarity ensued (at lease for me).
