can we try and steer you into kt333 or nforce2 instead? i think those are better chipsets than the kt400.
if you are not interested in those (should be) , then wait for the kt400a. (IMHO)

Well i just bought the motherboard i just want a new one i love the soyo my friend had........................................I also have a xp2200 processor if you would like to go with that just give me a decent price and maybe we can talk cgonz99@hotmail.com

Soyo makes a killer board. are you going to be using that XP2200+ in your new board or are you going to go with a new CPU too?

Take a look at the Epox 8K9A2+. It has pretty much everything including 5.1 sound, 6 USB 2.0 ports, two ATA133/RAID IDE channels, two S-ATA/RAID channels, and onboard LAN, and it overclocks like mad. 🙂

I have the p4 version of that board.. 😛 (same features and everything) and it seems to be rather nice.. i actually wanted to try all the on-board devices and all is good. i am currently using the sound and LAN without any complaints. I'd probably recommend the EPoX even having not used that particular model!

With the verdict pretty much out on the Nforce2 Mobo's and they becoming rapidly available...in a word No and I yield to Yield's statement 😉

NForce2! w00t!
I am thinking of getting an NForce2 based rig running myself actually..... 😀😀😀

It sounds like a great chipset, and I've never used an NForce before, I'd like to try it.

Any particular reason you want to go with a KT400 board? If not, you should definitely choose an nForce2 motherboard. See my 6-way roundup thread here.

Also, for those wondering, don't expect KT400A to be anything spectacular. 😉

Weren't expecting spectacular (at least i wasn't) but a good improvement over the 400 hopefully.
much like the 266-266A

hopes!
but yeah, NForce2 for Athlon platform if you're gonna buy any time soon.

I agree with everyone else, go get an nForce2 mobo (A7N8X maybe?). Also, as Evan said, I don't expect KT400A to be the incredible chipset that people may think it will be.

Care to say why not? Is that being based on the Granite Bay introduction a few weeks back?

this is because amd chips are not bandwidth hungry and their fsb is 333mhz, which can be supplied by ddr333
the p4's fsb is 533mhz and thats why they use dual channel ddr266 to provide the 533mhz

I won't speak for Evan, but, KT400A is supposed to be bringing Dual Channel DDR to the Athlon. That's all that needs to be said. The Athlon really can't make any use of the bandwidth provided by Dual Channel DDR333. nForce2 in most apps (save Professional 3D) gets absoletly no benefit from Dual Channel DDR333/400 (highest increase according to this is 3.2%, except for SPECviewperf). And I will add, that the main reason nForce2 gets anything out of DCDDR in SPECview perf is due to DASP, so VIAA would have to duplicate/exceed nForce2's DASP. Here's what Anand said on the next page of that article about the improvements in SPECviewperf:
The combination of these two improvements to NVIDIA's DASP results in very competitive performance and in some cases, a significant performance boost when using DualDDR. It is the improved DASP that NVIDIA attributes the extremely large performance gains in SPECviewperf to. But if SPECviewperf were the only situation that the second generation DASP improved performance in it wouldn't be all that useful, so where else will the new DASP increase performance?

Unfortunately most of the situations where DASP and DualDDR will really make a performance difference are difficult to quantify; it's a problem we, as well as NVIDIA, have had a tough time solving. SPECviewperf is a good example of a situation where you're bound by the ability of the memory controller to fulfill requests which is where nForce2's dual memory controllers can come in handy.
So, honestly, the bottom line is that KT400A will need to have significant optimization improvments over nForce2 (in both chipset, and IDE drivers) to be able to make a difference. Plus, VIA can't compete with nForce2's feature set (5.1 Audio, 2 LAN chips, USB2 and Firewire, and GF4MX video). Just my 2c

I knew all that. I just rather see people give a reason instead of just agreeing with a motherboard Editor. 🙂
