just on www.newegg.com ...the cheapest one that will work :[....i looked at amd's approved list but im just hoping that their list is not up to date :\

If there isn't any decent priced case for the 1700, i might as well go with this setup

xp 1600 cpu, k7s5a mobo
and the BLACK EVERCASE E4252BEF5 which is amd approved (300w pentium) for 1600 cpus....total price after tax and shipping is $257.90...

i plan to leave my sytem on for 3+ days straight a lot so might take that into consideration...

i really want to pay that extra $4(so total about $262) to get a 1700cpu instead of a 1600....but i dont wanna shell out an extra 20-$30 for a better power supply

Just about any ATX case will work. Its the powersupply that you need to have some concerns with. Ideally, the case/PS you purchase should be on the AMD approved list, but realistically it probably wont be (too many out there). Just insure the PS is atleast 300 watts, and a good brand, quality is what counts with the Athlon XP.

I can't imagine a PS able to handle a 1600xp and not be able to handle a 1700xp. I would think that's just where they stopped testing it at so they can't legally state it's ok for a 1700xp when in accuality it will probably do more. Of course, if they won't say it will work, no one here can guaratee your success with it either. I'm sure there are people here with that case and PS with a 1700 or 1600 OC'd to 1700+ levels. Hopefully one or two of them will chime in and tell you r their results.

I'm not sure if it's AMD approved to 1700 levels, but check this thread for a case and PS that I'm sure many people are running 1700+ levels with. Also, it would be a better case IMO. After rebate and shipping charges (depending where you are) it could be about the same price. My total cost after rebate will be $70.63.
