i currently have a GeForce FX5200 (pci)
i ordered my new cpu, mobo and ram last night, expect mobo/cpu tomorrow or friday, ram monday or tuesday
i wont be getting a new video card until i get enough money from what people reccomend

primary use will be games (prefer to run half life 2 (among others) at maximum settings)
i will also be doing some casual autocad work

what do you reccomend? i am currently looking at a 6600GT
must be PCI-E

Tell me your new system specs.

Do you plan to use AA/AF in your games?

What type of resolution do you plan to use in games?

No, don't do that...thats a WASTE of money...you can get a 6800 for pretty cheap if you wanna shell out an extra like...$80 or something compared to the 6600gt. I THINK you can unlock some pipelines in the 6800 as well, making it like a gt or something...

PLUS, the 6xxx series has Shader model 3.0 (you knew it was coming), where as the X800 doesnt

so yeah, 6600gt or 6800, take your pick

I think you should buy a Voodoo2 baby, dual link two of them, for optimum fire power! Make sure your using windows 98 tho. Man, think of it, ever place Dark Forces on a Voodoo2? If you havnt, then the force has not been with you, always.

How is it a waste when its a crapshoot that it won't work?
A 50% chance of artifacting or worse is NOT a good way to spend money.

I think that with that processor the X800XL is a good buy.

It will also allow you play games at 1024x768 for quite some time. You may also be able to use Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering in the beginning.

Anit-Aliasing smooths out jagged edges in the game making it more realistic. Anisotropic Filtering sharpens textures(walls, ceilings, floors) when you view them below a certain angle. It also increases the realism of the game.

However, if you ever want to run higher resolutions with all the eyecandy turned on, you need to go for the 6800gt.
