I'm planning on going SLI and I currently have a Rosewill 500W PS. I doubt this will be enough so can anyone recommend me a PS for two 7900GTs? Preferably around the $100 mark that is also quiet/silent.

Look at the Silverstone Strider series of PSUs.

In about three months the M12 Seasonics should be here in 500, 600 & 700 watt flavors.

The Enermax 550W and Sparkle 550W are both high quality PSUs with a single 36A 12V line for around $100, although I'm not sure about the noise levels. A single rail is probably the safest bet for two video cards.

It's about $130 and extremely quiet.

Even the 500w might be ok.

Almost certainly would, the 7900GTs don't draw much power.

Not only that people tend to over-buy on the PSU. The 500 watt S12 is more then enough.

I don't know about the Enermax, but that Sparkle is rather loud. It is a great supply for the price, it just doesn't fit the OP's criteria.

I use the TruePower 550 Server power from Antec. This power supply is a beast! I have 2 HDD's, a 3D-1, 3200+, DVD combo drive and a floppy all running off of this. Also theres 4 case fans running off of it, and 3 of lighted.

The Enermax 550 is a an EPS unit for servers - it's reasonably quiet, but not silent. Its 92mm might be a little loud for a silent PC application. It has a REALLY long cable harness, which may be of interest to some, and it holds its voltages under load well.

I had some nice kid PM me early this AM and he showed me a Silverstone unit that impressed me. It impressed me in a few ways, but the two most impressive things were simply having the complete specs easily available. This shows me straight away that they're probably not hiding anything. Then, their values are calculated on constant duty load and not some short duration spec that in most cases, turns out to be a less than 1 second value. This way, you don't have to guess as to what you are getting. Quite frankly, from what I saw, I'm really impressed and you gotta know what a power supply snob I am! I simply am NOT that easy to impress and this one does it at a reasonable price too!

alot of the better name brand companies are and have started to post there technical specs based on contininuous output!!

Yet what concerns me is that alot of companies don not even list even list or if they do its buried somewhere at what temps there PSU are rated becuase we both know that if the air going to the power supply is going to be 25 degrees Celsius in the real world because with a 15-degree buildup inside the machine first, before the air reaches the power supply, that means that the room temperature would have to be 10 degrees C. Now you?re talking about it being in the 50s Fahrenheit.

Anyways all good stuff!!

The Sparkle FSP550PLG-SLI is probably the best value in SLI rated PSUs today. Can be found for around $85. + shipping (ewiz.com). If the fan isn't quiet enough for you, you'll have some money left from your $100. to mod it to suit. I agree with GY that the Silverstone Striders (OEM from Enhance) are decent as well. I found the SST-ST56F at $102. +sh vs. $136. shipped from the Egg. The Egg has egg on own face in the PSU category!

This just in !
Or if you can stretch your budget a bit, The new Fortron "Epsilon" series are hard to beat. Search for the FX-600GLN with Froogle and you'll find places that are listing the price at under $120. + sh (the Egg is trying to get $147. shipped for it. This is one of the more interesting new designs in a while. See a review of its big brother (700 Watter) with a lengthy analysis of the series' design at http://www.xbitlabs.com . Much lighter and more compact than many competing designs for solid technical reasons.

I just browsed ALL 106 of the 501 to 600 W PSUs on newegg. And found a HiPro 600 Watt unit. The listing for it claims that it has Active PFC! Split +12 rail that can be combined for more flexibility at the flip of a switch. Etc. The model no. led me to believe that it is made by Topower (same as OCZ and other popular brands) so I checked and dang if it isn't a Topower Top-600P5. If you can verify that it really has active PFC, then the price is a steal (note a similarly speced model up the page with the Topower brand is ~$130.) Even if it doesn't have aPFC it might be worth a look at only $77.00 shipped. Specs say it has plenty of oomph to do SLI but you may need to use connector adapters.

I edited my earlier post somewhat, so it may be worth a reread...

That?s all well and good but 600 watts isn't at all necessary; anything over 400 is plenty. The OP is also looking for low noise; whenever you need a high quality PSU and low noise Seasonic is hands down the best choice.

Hey PD,

Well, he doesn't HAVE to BUY the 600 Watter - heck it's even modular, something he shouldn't want anyway (insert "resolutely unteachable" quote here). There are smaller models in the same line. You can lead a horse to water...

I think you know that I know that he doesn't NEED 600 W. And most would be quite happy with the noise level and overall quality of the Striders/Enhance at the price point.

This one Enhance 500 W would probably serve the OP quite satisfactorily.

You're right, I do know that you know he doesn?t need 600 watts, but still the 600 watt recommendation? I guess I don't see the point of all these 500-600 watt recommendations when it's practically impossible to build a system to approach such high power levels. My point is there are already too many misconceptions floating around regarding power requirements, we don't really need anymore.

Noise is subjective, but I for one wouldn't be happy with one. Check out this SPCR review of a 360 watt 80 Plus certified (80% min efficacy) Enhance. At only 150 watts it's already producing 36dBA, not too promising from a noise perspective.

BTW, Nice find one the 500watt Enhance, you don?t see them very often in retail, outside of SilverStone that is.

eWiz carries quite a few Enhance and Enhance has ramped up their presence in the States (new US web site and all). laptops4me.com also carries lots of them but check their ResellerRating - one to avoid for sure!!!

re the SPCR of the 350W. Except for the noise, it looks like it could take care of most systems just fine.

PSU cooling is one of the easiest things to fix for both noise and effectiveness. Check my Zippy mod if you haven't seen it before.
