in some cases, a somewhat noticable difference. to me, the raptor is not worth the gb/$ when i can tolerate the speeds of a 7200.

For the price and performance, a Maxtor Maxline 3 cannot be beat. It is cooler and possibly quieter than the drives in that capacity and price range. It has a 5 year warranty also. If you want a fast, quiet and cool drive, thats the drive for you. If you're a loyal Seagate customer, then obviously the drive mentioned above will do good. Seagate is excellent in their quality but a bit lacking in performance. Even Western Digital has them beat nowadays.

And at least if you get a Maxtor, you know you will get to send it in at least a couple times to be replaced so that you can be reassured that the warranty process does work. I would rather buy something that costs more than have to put up with replacements and such. I just see way too many dead Maxtors to recommend anyone buy them.

I recommend either the Seagate 300GB or the WD 300GB.

If that's all then watch for a slick deal on a drive. Come early next year I'm sure you'll find one of the listed drives for the price you want to pay, but maybe PM/AR YMMV.
