Pretty much what the title and subtitle say:
Edit: much simplification
£200-250 budget for both monitor and Graphics card, I don't want one to outpace the other (massive res monitor weaksauce graphics, etc.), My priority is best value for money rather than best short term performance. I am not entirely sure what res or size of monitor to go for

for video card, I would say the new AMD/ATI Radeon 4770 videocards. In the US, they are retailing around $100-$110 depending on the vendor. These videocards cards perform just as well as the AMD/ATI Radeon 4830 and 4850.

Go to newegg and browse 1920x1080 monitors. Those appear to be the sweet spot with respect to performance vs price.

I personally like the idea of a 1920x1200 monitor but those 1920x1080 monitors are much cheaper (while only losing 10% of the resolution)

The 4850 with 512MB GDDR3 might cause a slight bottleneck (depending on what game), but I wouldn't get a smaller monitor because of that.

I got my T260HD (26" 1920x1200) for about a month now, and I just love it for the resolution and size even under normal websurfing/word doc/movies/etc use.

I only have a 4830 512MB, so I typically use medium textures and maybe 2xAA or none in more recent games. But works well enough for source games on highest settings and even with 8xAA.
