Reccomend a good low cost HT reciever

What speakers? If not large speakers, then the refurbished panasonic XR25 digital receiver in overstock should be pretty good.

I have a refurb'd Onkyo TX-SR501 in my media room and a Panasonic XR50 in my living room. Both sound great for less than $300, if I had to pick one I'd stick with my XR50. Slim design and runs alot cooler.

Onkyo TX-SR600 pretty close. I swear by this thing.
EDIT>> damn that's a refurb. I thought for sure this thing's price would drop by now...

You can get refurb 601's for about 300 with shipping. I own a refurb and it looks and works brand new. In fact, you can't tell the difference.

You might even be able to get a new Onkyo 601 for $300 if J&R finds a few more in their warehouse -- they've offered it at $299 a few times in their Friday One-Day Sales.

Call a local CC to see if they have any left over Onkyo 701s in.... ours has 2 left, their on clearance for $375... beyond a good deal for that receiver, goes for $625+ online.

Denon or Harmon Kardon. Although I don't know if you can find an H/K for $300.

I second those. I was actually looking at an HK on Amazon a couple months ago, really nice model for under $300, forgot the model tho.

Ecost has some great deals on Denon refurbs. They have the AVR-1804 for $287 right now. Ecost claims to be Denon Authorized, so it's probably a pretty good deal.

If it was me, I'd go for something a little better, but it's a friend that's looking.

I actually have a Sony STR-DB840 - a nice liitle gem if you can find one......
