This isn't for me; it's for a friend - I've already got a region/macrovision free player thanks to a flashed Pioneer 105s and a Hollywood+ . Anybody know anything about these players?I went up to work this afternoon to look and since I want to spend ~$100, these were my choices. Of course, I could just pick up an H+ or an X-card and stick it in their computer instead :) Especially if I can get a remote.

Bump before I head off to bed - I'll check the results in the morning.

I forgot to add to add in my original post that the ability to make the player region/code free would be nice, but it isn't necessary. Remote hacks only too, please - chipping a cheapo like this wouldn't really be worth it and besides, I'd likely break something. You know how it goes; if it weren't for bad luck I'd have none at all. :D

Have you looked at any Apex brands? Supposidly they're good with all that region free stuff (and mp3/etc)

Actually, I have, and I may end up with one yet. Saw an Apex 3-disc changer on Circuit city's website that was in my pricerange. But the ones listed here are things that I can get at work, which means a 10% discount. And that's on top of the fact that a few, namely the RCA and Memorex ones, are already on clearance for less than $100

from personal experience, I have found that cheaper DVD players are better....my "costly" ones died quickly....I have gone through a Panasonic, Sony, and I am now using a Daewoo. I had all sorts of problems with the Panasonic AND the sony, but zero problems with my Daewoo.

I only go with Apex and Pioneer DVD players. Get an AD-1500, it takes 2 second to region hack it :D

What are you going to use it for? Are you REALLY going to be playing out of region DVDs?

Also, consider getting a player with progressive scan component outputs if a bigscreen TV might be in your future. The difference is amazing, and my Zenith was only $150 at CC. Looks amazing on a 65" set.

My family got an APEX Progressive scan dvd player with component video out, etc for around 100 bucks at sams the other day. Its really nice so far, and for the price with progressive scan its great.

Vortex -

Thanks for reminding me about Sams - just looked at their website and they've got (I think) a slightly better Daewoo model on there for the same price as the one I listed in the poll. I'll have to look into that. (have to mooch somebody's card though :D ).

Found an open-box Pioneer DV353 at circuit city this afternoon that was in my price range, and I probably should've grabbed it... wonder if it's still there?
