Recamendations on Hard Drives?

I was wondering what the hottest HD is out there? I am planning to use my computer for gaming...so what do you guys suggest?

The IBM 7200rpm drives are currently the fastest IDE drives, but the Maxtor 7200rpm HDs aren't far behind. If you'd like something cheaper and/or quieter, go for a Maxtor 5400rpm drive. The seeking times are only mediocre, but beside that they're pretty good.

The new WD ata100 drives are very impressive. I never liked Maxtor because they always gave me a headach when running an o/c'ed PCI bus.

Promise Ultra ATA-100 controller and IBM 45GB 75GXP hard drive. Its silent and fast.

It scored a 6970 on ZDNet WinBench 99 v1.2 Business Disk WinMark99 with 2.15% CPU Utilization on my system (see system specs in sign.). And I'm not running the most up-to-date drivers, or using a tweaked out system so you can probably get better...

either my seagate 20 gig or my new ibm 45 gig 75gxp is making an annoying THRUM THRUM THRUM sound. It's killing me. both drives work and the noise isn't that loud but it bugs me to all hell.

What Mwink said... looks like I'm buying Maxtors from now on... the most current 7 drives I have, 5 of them are Maxtors. The other two, an IBM and a Quantum came with the computers that I bought. The IBM has performed flawlessly. While the Quantum developed bad sectors in less than a month!

I beg to differ, Im a proud owner of 5 Maxtor hard drives to start with, but no way Quantum hard drives are unreliable, making a conclusion base on the experience of a few drives is simply unconvicing.

John:

New Maxtors take funny PCI buses with ease.

Oh I bet you'll hear a lot of bad experience with Western Digital, in my experience they've never made the best hard drives, nor the worst for that matter. Their offerings dont look appealing at all, at least to me.

Western Digitals have always treated me great. I've heard the newer IBMs and Maxtors are good too, so if price is an issue then go with one of them and I don't think you'll have any problems.

I always liked Fujitsu about 3-4 years ago, but have prefered Maxtor over the last two years.

I'd defintly look at their Diamond Max Plus 60.

ibm = fujitsu. Look at the drives and their packaging, etc. They are virtually identical. I have seen a lot of brand new fujitsu drives with ibm labels on them as well. So if you are looking for an inexpensive hd, I say go fujitsu, but if you can, go with the ibm.

What about a Microstar? Specifically I was lookin' into a MSI K7T Pro2? (Sorry to change the topic so quickly from HD's to MB's)
