Nissan has recalled about six weeks of production of the 2014 Nissan Leaf for missing welds in the front structure that could compromise the car’s structural integrity in a crash.

Affected owners are being notified to take their cars back to the dealership for inspection to see if all necessary welds are in place. If they are not, industry sources tell us, Nissan is replacing at least some of the vehicles free.

If technicians find welds missing, the Nissan recall campaign bulletin number PC272 instructs the dealership to hold on to the car.

Our sources say Nissan also scrapped as many as 50 cars at the factory that failed inspection.

Where is the crusher mentioned? I would guess that they might just repair them and sell them used.

Oh they scrapped them. That doesn't away mean they were crushed. If they were unsold they likely were dismantled, parts reused etc.

I think the problem is then Nissan doesn't have any assurance of the person doing the welding. It's not a bolt-on fix.

My guess is that the areas that need to be welded are now inaccessible for welding.

Nissan is replacing at least some of the vehicles free.
That's an interesting statement. If I had purchased a 2014 and Nissan said it could no longer be driven due to their mistake, I damned well would expect a replacement. But more than likely the author of the article is sensationalizing the story to elicit an affect.

That, or it's possible the others were on lease, and Nissan is simply releasing the "owner" from the lease?

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2014 LEAF vehicles manufactured February 28, 2014, through March 12, 2014. The front structural member assembly may be missing welds, which could reduce the structural integrity of the vehicle if the vehicle is involved in a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection," and 305, "Electric-Powered Vehicles: Electrolyte Spillage and Electrical Shock Protection
