Rebuilding the daily driver for 1k

My old i7-860 is getting long in the tooth. This is an older chipset (P55?) on a Gigabyte board with a Radeon 4800 series card. A few annoying things going on like a dying data drive drive and slower performance due probably to windows 7 age of build (registry) and junky freeware programs. Also my JBOD cabinet bit the dusk from I think a power surge, so maybe the eSata card is also acting up-you get the idea.

Here is what I ordered today
1 x ($339.99) Intel Core i7-4790K Haswell Quad-Core 4.0GHz LGA 1
$339.99

1 x ($319.99) SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X 100363VX-2SR Radeon R9 280X 3GB P

1 x ($242.99) ASRock Z97 Extreme9 LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6
$242.99

1 x ($69.99) Noctua NH-U14S 140x150x25 ( NF-A15 PWM) SSO2-Beari
$69.99

That Sapphire Vapor-X 280X is going into my gaming machine and I will take its 4970 card. Decent price on this Sapphire card now with 3 free games from egg. Here is an interesting review http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/sapphire_vapor_x_r9_280x_tri_x_oc/17.htm

I have the big Antec P-160 aluminum case and a Coolermaster 750W I will reuse, with optical drive and a few hard drives. WIll probably finally use that Sandisk Extreme II SSD II got on sale.

Looking forward to that ASRock Extreme9 - Dual Intel NICs, and supports Thunderbolt, and the new super fast mSata. I am going to get ambitious and set up a second LAN for backup and admin as a few of my machines have Dual NICs. Anyone have this extreme9?

So lots of work over the next few nights to do backups and get all my licensing in order.

Genreally speaking, you should ask about parts before you buy. 🙂 Overall I'd say you overspend quite a bit on the GPU and mobo. In my opinion, better options would have been:

- Sapphire R9 280X $240 AR - the extra 80 MHz on the Tri-X isn't worth $80
- i5 4970K + ASRock Z97 Extreme6 combo $475 AR - this board has M.2 (mSATA is obsolete) and dual NICs for $92 less than the Extreme9. The combo saves you $15. The state of Thunderbolt on Windows is pretty awful, so you're not missing out on anything except pain and lack of vendor support.
