I'm rebuilding an old system for my friend, and I'm having problems. The system is an old PII-350 on an Intel Seattle 440BX mobo. I've got 384MB of RAM, a 6.4 GB HD, Ricoh CD-RW, NIC and Modem in it. All the hardware worked just fine when I moved some things to my new machine. It's been sitting unused for a while. The only component that was NOT in use with this machine when it was operating was the video card.
I needed a new card, so I bought an open box Kyro II card for the machine. With everything installed, the mobo beeps in a 1-2 based form (one long, 2 short), and according to the mobo guide, that means "Search for Option ROMs." Which doesn't help at all. I think it's the video card, because the manual says "An external ROM module (eg, video BIOS) can also issue audible errors, usually consisting of one long tone followed by a series of short tones." Which describes my issue. I took the card out, made sure the AGP slot was clear, and reseated the card, making sure it was seated firmly...no dice. Same beeps, and nothing displayed on the monitor.
I also tried booting with only CPU/vid/RAM/ and floppy, no dice. Same beep code. Tried with each stick of RAM independently. No dice. So, I'm left with thinking the video card. Since this was an open box item, I guess it's very possible the card is just dead, but wouldn't they test it before putting it back on the shelf? They were sold out of the new cards, so I could only buy the open box. Dead card, or could it be something else?
The computer is for my friend, and she does absolutely no gaming, and basically just uses it for internet and word processing, so I got the cheapest card I could find...don't tell me I need more power.
