Objective is to upgrade to 64bit os and 8gb of ram for as little as possible with as few sacrifices as possible.

Computer Use:

Currently: Web surfing and occasional office tasks

Proposed New Use: Solidworks 2008, Auto Cad 2008, Lord of the Rings online, The Orange Box, Microsoft Office 2007, Math CAD

Doesnt have to be a beastly CAD machine but the more Ram with big assemblies in solidworks the better I have noticed.

I currently have three computers in our computer lab at home and one of them is in need of an upgrade.

Current Specs:
  • ocz trupower 430w
    amd 939 x3500 @2.7
epox 9nda mobo (bulging caps sometimes takes three times to boot right)
    6800 gt
    2x512mb ddr400
    dvd burner
250gb maxtor hd w16mb buffer. IDE
What I "Think" I want:
  • 64 bit windows vista home premium 111$
    8gb ddr2 800 (4 x 2x) 200$
    e2160 processor @2.5 or better 85$
    3850 Graphics card 256mb 169$
    antec earthwatts 430w 60$ (30$ ar)
    500gb HD sata3.0gb/s 99$
    Arctic Freezer 7 pro 21$
    thanks for reminding me Mega!
    GA-P35-DS3 87$
So this would be about a 832$ upgrade , maybe 850 once I add shipping and mb standoffs. (I ruined one of these figuring out how to use them. Lian Li spring clip standoffs)

Parts I am salvaging from old system:

Lian Li Case (full tower) I think its called a pc-7b
DVD burner
All Peripherals: Speakers , Keyboard, Mouse, etc..

64 bit windows vista home premium 111$

Thanks Batuchka!

I am somewhat of an AMD fanboy so that is rather tempting, I could go AMD and have a quadcore system for the same price.

I am seriously thinking about this right now because I dont think Ill take a performance hit at all going from the e2160 to the amd 5000 black edition, or better yet the 9500 phenom.

Any more ideas, opinions on this?

Just wondering if there are application accelerators available to you in FireGL or Quadro cards.

I read somewhere that hacks can me made on ATI cards to run most FireGL accelerators but don't hold me to that ...

heyheybooboo,

That is an area I am not going to look into. The CAD modeling cards seem to be the priciest out there and the mark ups do seem exorbitant, and it is tempting, however Im going to keep my integrity and leave it upto the graphics card makers to keep (or establish) theirs.

thank you!

Since I do not get checks from Intel or AMD I am not a FanBoy of either.

I buy what is best for Me, Not what is best for to some imaginary Fan Club.

I have few AMD computers, coz at the time AMD provided the best "Bang to Buck".

Currently Intel is providing it.

I like the Bang to come from my computers performance, not from shooting my self in the Foot.

If you need to save every penny and what ever you are doing is not going to benefit a lot from the extra cache, get one of the E21xx, otherwise get E45xx

Jack,

I have always made my decisiions after weighing out the facts. This is why I have the system in my signature. I am a bit of an AMD fanboy (i hate the term) but it is my way of expressing that I have an irrational bias towards them. I do appreciate your opinion... after all I solicited it.
