rebooting servers remotely...

Terminal services in admin mode are your friend.

Assuming you can log into the machine still.

Not if you have an APC remote reboot port...

we have them at work and it's still not perfect.

mostly due to different/old and fail-over powersupplies, though.

I have a perl script that reads a POP mailbox for emails of a particular form. If the the form is correct, it can obtain a variable which is the server that it should reboot. It uses the sysinterals pstools to perform the reboot. Works like a charm.

i cant

why not? Did the server crash? Is it not on the network?

one of them i cant ping..

another a service is hanging before logon, i cna ping it and thats all i could do.

don't know what Dell calls them, but in HP world it's integrated lights out. You plug in a cat5 cable into a special port and you can press the power button remotely using IE or firefox. As long as the server has power you can power it up and down remotely. Great for those times when the OS locks up and you can't do anything even via IP KVM.

i cant

Pick up phone, call someone near server, press reset.

Um.. no. Someone still has to log in as the Administrator on the other end. You don't just push the reset button.

I have remote reboot APC units on pretty much all of my servers, and they have yet to let me down. There is always someone there that could physically reboot it to.

Rebooting the servers is not what sucks, what sucks is that they went down.

Uh, if it was hard locked/froze completely, that's what you'd do. 😛

Same for me... my APC units have never failed me either...

how do they work? Do you need one per server?

where I work the entire datacenter is on a central UPS and backup generator. we don't have a separate UPS per rack. we just plug a new server in

the integrated management boards work really well.

For a data center you can get managed power strips to control power as well for added "remoteness"

We've got a couple of the APC managed powerstrips, they work great and were cheaper than expected.
