My computer restarts rather than actually shutingdown when I shutdown. I changed the automatic reboot on error feature on XP and noticed that when I shutdown I actually get the blue screen of death(actually not the same look as before). I looked at event viewer and here is the error.
***********
AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an
illegal IO port address (0xcf8),
which lies in the 0xcf8 - 0xcff protected address
range. This could lead to system instability.
Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.

For more information, see Help and Support Center
at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
**************

There is no information in the help and support center and sadly I dont know when this started happening as I rarely actually shut down my computer. The system specs are:

Win XP
400 Watt PS
Epox8K7a
1.4 T bird
512 Crucial ddr
Radeon 7200
Sounblaster Live!

I have absolutely no idea what the error message could be coming from and as I said earlier I cant trace this to when it started happening. If anyone can hazard a guess it would be much appreciated.

I don't know about xp but I do know that win98 had this problem and it was fixed with the update that went by the name of mapped drives shutdown patch or something to that effect. Maybe xp has something similar. Good luck.

Sounds like you need to flash to a newer bios. Here's the Link to the latest versions for your board. The 1 dated 10/12 seems to address an issue related to your problem. I hope this helps.

Just for the heck of it, do a selective startup (msconfig) and disable the startup items. Reboot and then try to shutdown. If it shuts down properly, go back into msconfig and enable startup items and then start testing each individual startup item.

This is a shot in the dark, but I had this problem in Windows 98 SE and I found that somehow a Quickbooks program that was executed at startup was causing the computer to reboot upon shutdown.
