I started having some BSODs and reboots not long after installing the 3.8 catalysts. I've done the fixes I could find with Google, and although the problem seems diminished it still happens. I'm concerned it may be a hardware failure since I've had several reboots while reinstalling or fresh installing XP. The reboots occur when I'm installing or registering components. I always get the second error if I try to run TiVo with the 9700 AIW (usually as soon as I start it). I've tried ATI, but since I'm not under warranty any longer they're slow to respond. I've tried turning off system restore, fast writes, etc., but nothing seems to work. I've also tried selective device loads. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You installed a new driver and your machine started blue screening.

Suggested solution: uninstall the drivers you installed. (You can use system restore to roll your system back.)

I uninstalled them when this started. Reinstalled the 3.7 Catalysts and had the same problems. I uninstalled them w/ Driver Cleaner, uninstalled them with Driver Cleaner in safe mode, reinstalled DirectX, reinstalled Windows, and finally reformatted my HD and reinstalled Windows. Still have the same issue. That, and since it rebooted while installing devices during the reinstall of Windows makes me think it may be a hardware problem. I bought a new NIC since I seemed to have some conflicts, which helped but did not solve the problem. Is it time to take CRASHIE out back and put a merciful bullet in its head? I'd hate to think my Video Card is bad in less than 10 months, I've been o/c'ing it some but not much, I don't see a video corruption in 3dMark03. I'm still Memtest and 2XPrime95 stable at o/c'd speeds, though I've been running a straight 200FSB now for fear of data corruption.

A STOP 0x7F is a software (driver) problem, not a hardware problem.

The first parameter of 0x08 indicates a double fault.

Most commonly, this is caused by a kernel mode stack overflow.

Without a kernel debugger, it can be very difficult to troubleshoot.

I would start by removing all non-Microsoft drivers from the system.

Since you clean-installed XP, it is all too possible you have hardware problems. The way pros would handle this is to start with a minimal system, and a KNOWN good video card. Install XP. After XP has been installed, add other cards, one by one. If the problem starts up when a given component is installed, then substitute a known good component.

Easy things to try, though, are taking apart all plugs, and removing memory sticks, and cards, and then replugging them back. This is supposed to fix contact problems. Substitute a different HD cable. Set all BIOS settings to default or conservative.

Take off the HS, redo the heatsink compound.

Despite the fact that you have a great power supply, sometimes nutty problems like this turn out to be the PS. If you have an old one, try it. Or if you know someone that will let you borrow theirs.

Yes, I ran sigverif and was surprised to find that everything installed has a Microsoft signature. I thought for sure I had something installed without it, but nothing came out in the report. I suppose for my next step I could try the on-board sound and remove the Audigy2, but I don't have another video card to try. I'm leaning towards a VC problem, given that it started when I upgraded my catalyst and seems centered around multimedia apps. It'd suck if it was bad in 10 months when I paid $350 for it. I thought PSU for a while, but the problem should arise during stress testing if it were I'd think. I can run both Prime95 and 3dMark03 simultaneously without error, which is a lot more load than what I'm applying when I get the error. This one has me stumped, but I kinda believe I'll replace either my MoBo or video card and my problem will mysteriously disappear.

EDIT: I got a DCOM error, removed the registry entry it pointed to (MS Messenger), and have not had a problem despite messing around trying to get it to crash. I also had NAV monitoring msmsgr.exe, and turned that off. I can even run TiVo without any errors (some jerkiness in frames, but not much). We'll see if the joy lasts, or if CRASHIE lets me down again. There has to be a hardware component failing, given the reboots on Windows installs, I'm just hoping it was the Gigabyte LAN onboard that's the hardware issue. I've been optimistic before. Thanks very much for the assistance.

No, it still did it. This really seems like a hardware issue, I need to open er up again. <sigh>, at least it's not every 10 minutes like it was...

EDIT: I had an older verion of the 3.9 Catalyst. I downloaded the newer version, seems to have taken care of the issue. I'll stop with the blow by blow commentary. Thanks again for the help, hopefully my prob's gone.

EDIT2: Nope, still throwing out the occasional Save Dump or System Error.
