Reboot and Select proper Boot device (OCZ SSD issue)

I'm getting this error with my computer. The computer's been fine (using for about 1 month) with no hiccups. My main boot drive is the OCZ SSD - I believe the problem is with that drive.

I have the following:
ASUS M4A89GTD Pro / USB 3.0
AMD Phenom II X6 1075T Thuban 3.0GHz
OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD2-2VTXE120G 2.5" 120GB
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
ASUS DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
XFX HD-687A-ZNBC Radeon HD 6870 Black Edition

I also have 4 other HDDs as storage - which have since been disconnected, but still have the same problem. I tried disconnecting all USB devices and even disabling them.

I can boot and load up Windows 7 DVD with the ASUS DVD drive.

This problem just happened on a random restart. No viruses that I'm aware of, and the SSD seems to have been working fine up until now. The SSD also doesn't see much reading/writing - all my downloads and media go straight to one of my HDDs.

Can someone shed some light on this - thanks!

Update: I took out my OCZ SSD and loaded it up on another computer - it can read the contents fine. However I tried to boot it on a 3rd computer and it gave me the same error message...

Read my post on my OCZ Agility 2 SSD that died on me completely 3 days ago. My machine was giving me occasional BSODs (Win 7) with weird SSD actions after and then finally completely rolled over dead on me after less than 4 months use. My MB BIOS does not recognize the drive at all any longer after that happened. I am in work RMAing it with OCZ and will find out how good they are, I've read they are good about it. However, I had to install Win 7 on a WD Velociraptor for the interim and won't be happy at all if the replacement SSD dies quickly either. I expect at minimum 3 good solid years from a drive if not a whole lot longer. We shall see.

I have that issue sometimes on my machine. To fix it I have to reset my BIOS to default settings. It then works just fine.

I did reset my BIOS to default, still same problem. I changed the boot up order (to SSD) and still same error. It does boot with the DVD with my windows 7 in there.

I actually read that thread last night when this problem first surfaced for me. I'm at a loss to why this SSD would even be failing. I don't even write much to this SSD, all my media goes through my other HDDs. I only install programs on the SSD. It's been fully functional and speedy for the entire 4 weeks I've used it. I can still return to newegg and may go that route, but if it's a settings issue or something with the master boot record, I'd rather get that resolved than to reinstall everything.

That is what I have been doing with mine. It was installed as the C/boot drive with Win 7. The first time installation was fine but after a month or so I started getting those spurious BSODs and the SSD would not be recognized without a power down. Then 3 days ago I had the crash that ended up with the SSD completely failing and can no longer be detected by the BIOS. I read the reviews on Newegg, where I bought it, and about 1 of 5 people have their drive die within 6 months. Hopefully that means all the others are running reliably. I was very suspicious from the first BSOD and the weird HDD activity light as well as the failure to detect the SDD during a hot reboot that it was the SSD doing it. Then the failure proved to be the caveat. I will be running on my WD Veliciraptor until my replacement comes, I haven't gotten an RAM yet from OCZ, and will see if there are any such crashes which I don't expect. Then I will dupe the WD over to the new SDD, at least I hope I can. I am going to keep a base backup on a old spare drive for a quick install if the new SSD goes south on me.

Oh, and windows is constantly writing and caching internet stuff and all kinds of system maintenance activity on that SSD drive even though your data resides on your HDDs. Parts of that drive get a real workout constantly while you are simply powered up. Fortunately I have all my data, along with backups, on my two HDDs like you. Then all I lost was my internet favorites, which I had a recent backup of, and my cookies. Of course it was a few hours of work to install the OS and my apps but my data is safe.

I never did get any BSOD but did have maybe 2-3 random restarts. However it was always recongnized by the computer right after restart, no power down necessary.

I guess re-installing Windows 7 on this SSD is bad news waiting to happen?

Do you know if it's easier/faster to get a replacement with RMA from Newegg or OCZ?

I don't know yet. I submitted my RMA form to OCZ online yesterday about this time and have no answer yet. Some of the people reviewing it on Newegg said they got a response within 24 hours and made it sound like the drive replacement itself was very fast. But I am still waiting. I also noted in those reviews that an OCZ rep was responding to the posts from people with failed drives. He always sounded upbeat and always said when you get your replacement it should work fine with no further problems! I certainly hope so, this has been a real pain and a massive time consumer for me and I would much rather spend that time on other things.

Status report: I returned the SSD to OCZ under RMA on December 31. I received my replacement yesterday, a new 128GB Agility 2 SSD. I had been running my system the same as before the failure with a replacement WD Velociraptor drive. I didn't want to install from scratch again but some research tended to indicate I was going to have problems cloning to the SSD which was a smaller size. Anyway I also read one good thing about doing it with Acronis which WD offers for their drive owners on their website. So deciding to take a chance I downloaded it and plugged the new SSD into a spare port. I installed the Acronis within the Windows 7 environment and ran it from there. Once using it to initialize the new SSD it took off on its' own. After a little up front work it asked for a reboot and apparently booted into Linux and started doing the duping with a character based status screen. When done and with one more reboot it said it had completed. So I pulled the WD raptor and replaced it with the SSD. My system booted right up exactly as with the WD and my other drives, data, and software ready to go saving me a huge amount of work. It ran fine last night so hopefully I have a good SSD this time that will last for at least 3 years, the warranty period. I think I may grab an old drive in my stash and continue to do periodic clones to it from the SSD. I am certainly happy the WD edition of Acronis made my migration back to the SSD relatively painless.

I also went the RMA route with OCZ and got the new drive in 2 days. Sent the old one back and was credited back to my account. New drive seems to be working fine (but then again so was the old one, after I reformatted everything). Used paragon backup to easily create the image and now I'm set. Hopefully it doesn't happen again but I've got the backup to reduce that headache of re-installing everything.
