Rebates: You must call!!!

I know - put it in the AT Hot Deals Rebate Tracking thread. But I believe some ATOTers rarely frequent that forum to look at that thread first.

My story
I bought a western digital HD a few months ago and had two rebates attached to it, one from Western Digital and the other Beast Buy. WD has a website to for status. And looking my rebate up, it said it had no status (like my rebate did not exist). So much for tracking, eh?

I called the toll-free number just now. The help specialist identified my rebate and said the check had been cut today. I didn't mention my first name, but he did identify me correctly so I know they received my rebate form. So, from Western Digital, the check is in the mail.
😉

I've been on hold for Best Buy's rebate tracking for 15 minutes. Now - I have a representative who tells me she doesn't have any tracking of mine at all and that she admits they are two weeks behind in processing all rebates. I have a case # assigned to it and I'm supposed to call next week.

But the important lesson here is to call. I think many companies are betting on us either not sending the rebates in or forgetting about them if we do. I think since shops advertise such low prices ("after rebate") and there isn't a stink about not receiving these on-time or at all, the prevalent use of rebates will continue.

I wouldn't call on every rebate but certain rebate fulfillment companies are notorious.

Whenever there's a rebate involved whether it's $1 for tampons or $300 Dell rebate:
1) Follow the instructions very carefully, R E A D them very carefully.
2) Submit your rebate ASAP.
3) If it's a big rebate ($30+) consider sending it via USPS certified mail with return receipt or delivery confirmation, yes it's $4 but it's worth the peace of mind.
4) Before step 3 MAKE COPIES OF EVERYTHING!!!
5) Save the rebate form locally on YOUR hard drive, eventually the rebate will be taken offline.
6) CALL and bug the crap out of them if you do not receive your rebate within the specified time period.

One day I invision a rebate tracking website, I already have the URL just need to find the time and some database/PHP guru's to help me set it up.

A lot of people have had problems with Best Buys rebates. One of the MANY reasons I will not ever shop at Worst Buy

Yes, the saving the rebate to your hard drive is important. I missed out on a $100 cell phone rebate because of this. T-Mobile sent me a letter saying "the rebate you applied for ended in August."

The thing is, I bought my cell phone in October, and I'm sure it said it was still in effect when I bought my phone. Unfortunately I didn't save a copy of the rebate so I couldn't prove anything.

Paragon (www.rebateshq.com):

Early December - Sent in 2 rebates for the same product.
Late January - got email saying one of my rebates was accepted and would be sent soon. Website has no record of the other rebate.
Early March - emailed Paragon through the website asking WTF?
March 17 - got rebates in mail. Deposited today! 🙂

6 to 8 weeks my a$$ !!! :| I bet that these rebate places routinely deny eligible rebates and not bother processing them until you contact them.

I just caught Parago this week claiming they never got my rebates.

I let them lie for a while & then told them I had copies of everything & had the return reciept in my hand & named the person who signed for them... They then agreed to graciously accept phone resubmission, but it'll take another 4 weeks.

I turned them in the the FTC, and filed a complaint with my state's attny general's office.

Then I called & bitched @ Staples & got a $100 gift certificate for my troubles.
