reaver wifi scanning my router

I am playing (read learning) with wifi scanning. I am using reaver under linux mint to do the scans. When i scan my own netgear DGNG3700 router (signal strength -50db) i get about 2 seconds per pin. When i scan a distant neighbors router (with his permission) (-80db sig strength) i get about 200 seconds per pin. I am using a fancy, mil spec wifi card (made by Shreen) which is rated at 2W dBm (connected to a 16 dbi yag which puts me at transmit limit) and -99db sensitivity.

My question is: Is what i am seeing the result of signal strength or does my router simply suck and needs to be upgraded to make it more resistant to scans?
