Reasons why driving sucks ...

1. I hate traffic.

2. I hate how my area is getting more and more congested. It used to take me 2 minutes to get to my work less than 1 mile away, now it takes about 7-10 minutes. Ridiculous.

3. I hate bad drivers. This includes the ones who go 60mph in the fast lane on the beltway, those who don't know that a merge lane doesnt mean you have to stop at the merge sign as if it were a stop sign, leaving the whole half mile merge lane open, those who dont know how to switch lanes, etc.

4. I hate the beltway. I live in maryland, home of the infamous 495 and my gf lives in virginia, about a 20 mile drive on the beltway. It is now officially confirmed that there is no way to get to her place without having to hit some bumper to bumper traffic, unless it's at night. but now they are doing night construction which eliminates the night time for no traffic. Which leads me to my next rant.

5. I hate road work. Seems like every 3 miles I see the bright orange ROAD WORK sign on the road. This in turn causes more traffic, which I also hate as noted in #1. This makes my time to travel longer. And the worst part is that when the ROAD WORK is finally complete, it looks as though not a damn thing changed on the road, except now there is a new road work sign a few miles down the road, where absolutely nothing will change. I hate road work, the roads are fine, leave them be.

6. I hate it when there is a backup for no apparent reason (no road work signs), and then about 2 miles down the road I see flashing lights on the side of the road, in the emergency lane, with a car pulled over infront of the cop car, then after I pass the cop car, there is no traffic. For god's sake people ... STOP BEING SO NOSY AND KEEP DRIVING! IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU!

7. I hate it when there is a backup for no apparent reason (no road work signs, as above), and then about 3 miles down the road I see flashing lights on the other side of the road, in the emergency lane, with a car pulled over, and when i pass the cop car, there is no traffic. Again, as in #6 ... WHO CARES ABOUT A COP PULLING SOMOENE OVER! KEEP DRIVING!!

Okay well I think that's pretty much all the reasons I can think of. I will update it if anymore bother me. I just drove home from my gf's house and hit about 3 backups and almost got in an accident because of someone pulling into me, then when I got off the beltway the idiot was stopped at the beginnig of the merge lane, so I had to come on here and rant.

All the reasons I ride my bike to work. Every time I get lazy and drive, I'm subject to all the crap you listed and find myself wanting to beat the nearest person to death with my steering wheel Club®.

I'd rather be sweaty than terminally pissed off every day.

So you drive less than a mile to work. Why not walk or ride a bike.

because of the heat and crossing major roads. with all of the cars there is hardly time to jump accross the busy highway I have to cross. not to mention I have to cross over an entry and exit onto the beltway to get to my job. and the heat right now is pretty bad. it's not like a quarter of a mile, its more like 4/5 of a mile to work ... just so you didnt think i was like walking up the street or somethin heh :p.

If I worked 1 mile from where I live, I'd ride a bike. Hell, if it were a good day I'd walk. An electric scooter is an option for that distance!

<-- has a 25 mile commute that features 3 grades that exceed 7% for over half a mile each. (and a net altitude change of 1500') As well as roads that have more blind curves than Hellen Keller's head on Sarah Michelle Geller's body. A bicycle commute isn't happening.

I like driving, I just don't like being in traffic.

I like driving... traffic doesn't bother me too much unless I'm running late. As long as you have a good cd in, it's not too bad.

Why not find alternate routes to your girlfriend's house. I love to drive, especially when I find a route that I can drive that leaves me completely backroading it. It's nice to take a scenic drive through the woods of the suburbs, because though it may take just as long as my drive on the freeway, it is calming enough due to the scenery.

ahhh, it's nice to be laid back... none of that bothers me :) Sure, I'd rather people were smart, but as long as they don't hit me, I'm cool. They'll probably kill themselves later so it will all work out eventually

Anyone ever see Henry Rollins' standup DVD about how he can't listen to Slayer in his car because it makes him want to kill everybody on the road? f-ing hilarious and true...

Boo hoo? I walk a mile to work every day, it takes me all of 15 minutes, 20 if I hit the stoplights wrong. I have to go under the interstate at a busy intersection. And you know what, sometimes it gets hot here in Chicago too.

Quit making excuses and do it. You won't die and a mile or two of walking every day is good for you.

lol you guys are great. this isn't even a 9-5 job, i dont have a fulltime job yet cause i just graduated and im workin my part time job like 30-35 hours a week or so. i have the luxury of a car so i would rather take a car to work than walk. i know 15-20 mins isnt alot of walkin, but i would rather drive. and being very in shape and already walkin about 3-4 miles a day while on the job i don't think i need to worry about what is good for my health and what isnt...

yea i think i shouldn't have #2 in there for this thread, cause that doesnt have much to do with driving, but more with the congestion of my area because of all the new houses being buit and stuff heh. but i'll leave it in there so the prior posts will actually make sense.

Stop b!tchin! I walk almost 2 miles from parking lot to where I work every single day. And that includes winters when it is 5 degrees out and I'm crossing a bridge!

Plus, you're technically part of the congestion mentioned in #2. :D

If you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen. (or in this case out of the car)

All I'm saing is that walking is a perfectly fine solution to dealing with traffic. If you drive you'll just have to deal with all that stuff because there's nothing you can do about it if you insist on driving.

Get off the beltway, when going to your gfs house, and take 295. Another route would be thru the city. Either route would be shorter and faster than the eastern side of 495. BTW I agree w/the boo hoo guys. I run 2000 miles a month in that traffic, so suck it up. :)
