My check card got denied at both the grocery store and for an online purchase tonight. I have plenty of money in the bank to cover what I was buying and it was working fine Friday. Any ideas? I tried costumer support but of course they aren't there.

I tried that at the store and thats the only way I use it online. No go.

It was only $30 worth of stuff and I've spent way more than that before in a single day. I checked the account online and it looks fine so I don't think anyone went crazy with it online but you never know.

Some one stole the number and purchased massive amounts of stuff online.

Log into your bank acct website and see what info you can find regarding pending transactions

What's the exact error, or is it just a general "declined"?

If you bought a bunch of stuff today, the bank will put a freeze on it to prevent fraud.

Both the store and online said "Your purchase has not been approved by your bank.
Card expires in '08 and there are no pending transactions on the statment. It's bank of america btw.

Any possibility of putting money in the wrong account?

One reason would be if its a Citibank card.

Citibank always rejected my card at the most inopportune times which is why I dropped them.

I think edro might be onto something.

I did write a fairly large check the other day and it hasn't cleared. Maybe they froze the account until it clears to ensure there is enough in it.

The entire account shouldn't be frozen. You may have the amount of the check held until it posts to your account, but that should be listed in your pending transactions.

I work for a bank, but not Bank of America..so they may do things differently..I'm afraid I can't be of much help. :(

It is Bank of America, so I would expect the most half-assed way possible. ;)

It could be anything, a scratch on the card, the fraud protection divisiomd might have locked it, a problem with the network.......Thats why you need to call BofA tommorow morning they can look up the rejection code.

(I worked for BofA for a year during college)

Did BofA teach you that the magstripe is bypassed when the card is used online? ;)

Umm yeah you ass. IF he used it at the grocery store first and the strip was scratched enough the card would be locked until he calls the bank.

edit: especially if he tried it at the grocery store more than once.

FYI: You misplaced your sense of humor. Go find another one.

Bank of America locks cards if the magstripe is scratched? I've ran cards that had to be put in a plastic bag for the reader to pick them up..they worked fine. If not, keying them in manually almost always worked.

Sorry I don't find someone being a dick and trying to humiliate someone else amusing. (expecially when they have no clue what they are talking about) It depends on how the card is read, if it read the card number right and the CVV code wrong then it will raise a flag an lock it.

Did your bank send you a new card lately and you have to activate by making a phone call?

My bank did that because of the PIN stolen mess from other banks a few months ago. Just a though. I never had any problem with my debit/check card <with Visa logo>.
