Reasonably Priced VR Headset for Watching Movies

sub-80

Hello;

Am looking for a reasonably priced VR headset to watch HD movies. Don't want to spend 600-800 usd on Top VR Headsets until they have been in the hands of the masses and all kinks have been fixed.

Any recommendations?

Regards;

Using VR to watch HD movies just isn't the best of ideas. You're going to get less resolution and a likely some eyestrain from staring at something too close to you. If you really want to, though, you can try the Samsung GearVR (if you have a samsung phone) or Google Cardboard if you have a compatible phone.

After that, there just aren't any good headsets out right now. VR is cutting edge and you can't get something good this early at a reasonable price. Personally, I'd rather watch a movie on a TV or a projector anyway.

I don't recommend VR headsets for watching movies with the hardware that is currently available. There is a strong screen-door effect (SDE) due to the visible pixels & the resolution isn't quite there yet. However, strictly for movies, there is an alternative - the Glyph from Avegant:

It's a 720p headset that uses micromirror DLP projection. Engadget has a positive review:

It's currently $699, but doesn't require a computer to run - just anything with HDMI output (phones, tablets, computers, media players, etc.). It has a diopter adjustment so you don't need to wear glasses or contacts in most cases. All of the reviews I've read of it has been positive. Of course, it's a first-gen product, so it's expensive, kind of large, some people get nausea, it requires a lot of physical adjustments to get it tweaked for a good picture based on your eyes, where it sits on your face, etc. But if you're looking for something strictly for movies, this is the best option for quality right now.
