Reasonable Video Cards

Hello - My pre-teen kids play games like Guildwars and some of Medievel games...and my machine's video is starting to drag. The MB is an Asus A8N (I think the VM version), and for the most part that has worked ok. The board is about 1 year old.

Can I get a suggestion for a separate video card for a reasonable price, hopefully under $100?

Thanks

Paul

nvidia 7600GT for $100-120 after rebate at newegg.con offers good future-proofing

buy.com has a (40% slower) 7600GS for $50 after rebate and google checkout discount, see GottaDeal.com main page or somewhere in Hot Deals forum here.

This is a good card that will more than suffice for Guild Wars, and just about any other current game. Make sure the rest of your system is up to snuff as well, otherwise it is not going to matter what video card you have.

EDIT: WOAH. Just realized I linked you to a card that is not even compatible with your mobo. Sorry bout that. Here are two cards that will actually work with your mobo, and on top of that, they are faster than the one I linked earlier.

The second one is passively cooled, too. So if silence is something that is important to you, there you go.

Thanks for the tips...just to be sure the rest is ok...

The onboard graphics are GEForce 6150, so I assume anything is a significant upgrade.

I have an Athlon 3200+ with 1gig of RAM, 19" Viewsonic Q19wb LCD monitor. The HD is 7200rpm Seagate...The PS is 500Watts (always believe in going heavy on PS).

So I assume the rest will be ok with a new video board? I just this unit last year, but never had to worry about gaming of any significance.

Thanks

A good vid card will go a long way with that system. Thumbs up to the 7600GT for some light-moderate gaming.

Okay - I went looking at the 7600GT Boards and here is what I found that I narrowed it down to...

EFX
eVGA

Anything stick out that makes one better than another?

Thanks again!

I'd get the eVGA out of those cards.

might want to consider this?

edit: wrong link 🙂

What ATI card compares to a 7600GT? anyway here are some benchmarks with a 7800GT and a 7600GT.

That 7800 GT is "recertified"...does that usually mean it was returned, but found to have no problem...ie, like an "open box" item...

The other eVGA is all of a sudden out of stock...just my luck!

Any other suggestions if I don't want to pony up the extra $30-$40?
