Reasonable GPU match for my CPU/mobo

I'm fixing to upgrade the GPU on my game rig (GAME in sig below.) My mobo is not the Gen3, so it only has PCIe 2.0...

I have been eyeballing the EVGA GTX970 but I don't want to waste my money if the CPU/mobo can't make full use of it... I don't know how much that PCIe speed will hold it back, if at all.

I normally play MW 1/2, etc, and BF 3/4 at 1920x1080.

Your pci gen will have no adverse effect on gaming. And your cpu is fine, even if not overclocked. You are good to go. I have read reports of GTX 970 gpu usage not going to 100% when it should, but those appear to be game specific and setting specific issues (AA, physics, etc).

You pushing a high mhz monitor?

If not, 760 to a 970 might not yield any discernable results in those games

No, just standard 60Hz... Jeepers!

I went from a 560Ti 448 to the 760 and didn't think there was that much of a difference, but I kind of expected that, but not 760 to 970.

It's like a 1-2% difference between PCIE-2.0x16 and PCIE-3.0x16 if I remember correctly. I run a 970 on a PCIE-2.0 H81 board and it gives me the same framerates as the benchmarks show for Z97 boards and overclocked i7's (I run a locked Xeon E3). You have more than enough horsepower to push a GTX 980, much less a 970.

760 should have nearly doubled performance from a 560TI.

Correction: That was on my 1600x900 desktop...

The 760 has been a good card, don't get me wrong, but I want to DX the 560 in my work PC, put the 760 in there... and upgrade the game PC. I don't mind spending the money on the 970, but I don't want to waste money, either.

Ok, now the crystal ball question:

Will the release of the GTX960 lessen demand for the GTX970... and maybe they will ease the price a bit? I would love to see a sub-$300 GTX970!
With 2GB V-ram...I doubt it...they're aimed at two completely different consumers IMO.
