Utah designates Browning M1911 official state firearm

The 1911 was one of the most widely-produced pistol designs of the 20th
Century Utah has become the first US state to designate an official state firearm.

The Browning M1911 joins the state fossil (allosaurus), fruit (cherry), gem (topaz), bird (sea gull) and other symbols with official designation.

The gun was designed by Utah native John Browning. The law's sponsor said it symbolised freedom and empowerment.

Opponents said it was inappropriate to glorify a firearm, citing the January mass shooting at a congresswoman's constituent event in nearby Arizona.

The .45-calibre semi-automatic pistol was designed by Browning, who was born in Utah in 1855, to fill the US military's need for a pistol with stopping power - the ability to fell an enemy with a single shot.

It was adopted by the US Army in 1911, and first saw action in combat with Mexican rebel leader Pancho Villa in 1916, according to the Browning Arms Company. It was later used in World War I and beyond.

Some whiny Democratic Utah State Representative Brian King opposed the bill.

"When we are talking about a state symbol we would do well to come up with one that is more unifying than divisive and this is a very divisive symbol for obvious reasons," he whimpered to Reuters. "This is just a poor choice for a state symbol."

What are you, Communist?

The only thing a gun does is empower you to kill someone. Practical empowerment would come from something like a shovel, or a good education. America is too stupid to figure this out, which is why they think sending troops to another country protects our freedom. Any country that thinks killing people somehow ties to freedom is an evil nation, America has no right judging other nations.

So that's a yes I take it. I can't take the time to read your rantings taken from your little Red Book Comrade. All I can say is that, "Thank God" that the God fearing people of Utah can set a prime example to the world by endorsing an official handgun to help keep America free.

I honestly feel bad for you, as you obviously live in one of those "progressive" nanny states who's people have given up their rights to defend themselves.

I just hope that you live in a safe neighborhood, or you're screwed.

So we could have just dropped a bunch of shovels and textbooks on France to free and empower them during WW2? Could have saved us a bunch of money.

Don't forget polygamy as their official endorsement of marriage either.

According to Malak that's all the Nazis really needed: shovel, or a good education.

My location on this planet has nothing to do with it. I could live in a cave on the other side of the earth and still see how ridiculous this association is. Rights have nothing to do with it. You are born free. Killing people doesn't keep that freedom safe, it takes it from someone else.

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Well you can just walk out and tell the guy who's about to kill you that he's wrong. I'm sure he'll put down his gun and change his life because, you know, you're right.

All the world needs is love, right? That solves everything. There won't be any crime if you get rid of guns! People wouldn't even think about doing crime! Because there won't be any guns to commit them with!

I have shot quite literally thousands of rounds. Not once have I even pointed an empty gun towards someone. Though I should admit to you, I once did execute an old Laserjet printer using a gun. The trouble that thing gave me over the years, trust me, it was guilty and needed the most severe punishment available.

Browning is a legend as is that weapon and it's design. A thing of beauty. He and that weapon symbolize American greatness and ingenuity and should be honored as such. Good for Utah.

and lol, Utah.

The first thing that came to mind about this title: I wonder how many Irish immigrants this gun claimed before the Mormons got their freedom.
:hmm:

Oh gee, well aside from the obvious aspect of self defense as opposed to cowering and waiting (in many cases) 10+ minutes for the cops hoping the bad guy doesn't kill you (God forbid you end up in such a situation), it could harken back to the fact that our country was founded in a Revolutionary War.

Edit: Oh and the M1911 helped win WWI, WWII, Korea, and won many battles in Vietnam.
