On a motorcycle it is absolutely 100% critical to be able to 'see through' the person you're following.. I never, ever follow anything where I can't see through the back window out the front

The closer you get to something like that trailer or truck, the more you put your entire future in that driver's hands. You can't see around them and get very complacent.
How many have followed a truck over a nasty chuckhole?
It is a heckova lot easier to avoid things if you have a moment or two to see them first.

Either he was a 'tard, or it was a semi-divided highway with left turns on it. We have several of those here. You'll know the road and figure somebody is getting in position for the left, but some out-of-towner will get all up behind the guy in the left lane.

I make it a habit not to follow large commercial vehicles and pickup trucks with shit in the back (because pickup truck owners are notorious for not securing shit in the back of their trucks) or vehicles towing something. I'm always looking ahead and through vehicles whenever possible.

A lady I used to work with, her brother and some of his buddies were car pooling to work. While on the way to work one morning, they passed an 18-wheeler in the opposite lane, a part came off the 18-wheeler, went through the windshield and hit the guy in the head. The part turned out to be something from the brake assembly.

The poor guys brain was so damaged, he lost all motor control to the point where all he could do was blink to answer questions and was on a breathing machine. One night he vomited up some food that had been given to him through a feeding tube, and choked to death on his vomit.

Lucky nobody in the above video was killed.

Do you get compensation for that? I mean that's definitely unfortunate, but at the same time if both drivers were just doing their thing, then neither are truly at fault... but dang.

Yeah makes me nervous too. In the linked video, though, the debris appears to be have been kicked up by the leading vehicle? (Instead of something falling off of it.)
It's really ironic that the driver was filming the crap falling off the flatbed, only to be smashed by the 2x4 from the OTHER truck.

As to all of you saying this is not tailgating...you have not been in an accident than where the car you are traveling in rear-ended someone. I personally have not been the driver, but I was the passenger when my sister hit someone going MUCH slower than this guy with similar distance. You put WAY too much trust in your breaks and ability to react to road obstacles if you think driving at highway speeds that close to someone is safe. I'm not saying that I haven't done it before...I certainly have/do, but I'm aware that I'm taking a chance when I'm doing it.

'car length' has absolutely no meaning in tailgating because vehicles speed vary.

three seconds is the least acceptable safe distance in any given speed. this guy was following at one second or less (look at the road marker).

This is a sad story, amazing she survived. I immediately thought of this too once I saw the post come through the window in the vid, but couldn't remember her name. Cops and State Patrol have really cracked down on unsecured loads around here, I see trucks pulled over all the time. Serves them right too, an unsecured load will only hurt/maim/kill other drivers, never the asshole at fault.

I remember a lawyer friend telling me about one of these cases they worked on about a ladder that was not properly secured to a truck and it managed to shoot into the windshield of the car behind them. The ladder managed to decapitate the person driving behind the truck. That's why I'm always wary drying behind trucks with ladders on them.
