WHat kind of rear surrounds do you prefer? Monopoles or bipoles? I'm trying to figure out which ones to buy. Some people seem to think that monopoles are better for music, while bipoles are better for movies. Do you agree?

For the record, the proceeding post was a complete and total joke.

EDIT: spelling. You'd think as a college sophomore, I'd be able to spell complete without using a 'a'. ;)

It all depends on the room I think, and also personal preference.

<< Another reason not to use bipole - harder to wire. >>

Nope. I understand your logic though. Dipole surround speakers DO have two drivers or two sets (mid and tweet) facing opposite directions, but they are wired together, internally, out of phase. IOW, there's only one connection on the outside of the speaker itself, then inside the speaker, it branches off to the two drivers.

I have a set of Dipole surrounds myself...that's how I know.

Back to the question. It's pretty simple, actually. If your surrounds will be mounted in back of you (firing towards the back of your head) get monopoles. If the surrounds will be mounted to the sides of your head (firing at your ears) get dipoles.

I thought bipoles have two inputs so that you have to run 2 sets of wires to each speaker. hmmmmmm, I wonder where I got that from <<scratches head>>

You're thinking of bi-wiring speakers maybe? :)

You're thinking of Bi-amping Where there ARE separate inputs for the woofer and the mid/tweet. Professional PA speakers are usually biampable. This requires more amps and and electronic crossover, but the speakers play much louder and cleaner due to the fact that they are only reproducing the frequencies that they best reproduce.

Depends on what you want.

Some people like dipoles for movies and I prefer monopoles for music. Then I again I prefer monopoles for movies too.

I think bi-wiring provides no benefit but that's a different thread (and all of my speakers have posts for bi-wiring). Bi-amping is a completely different kettle of fish.

My setup for those who care:

Fronts: Paradigm Studio 60
Centre: Paradigm Studio CC
Rears: Paradigm Monitor 7
Sub: SVS 25-31PC and ART351 equalizer.

It depends on what your main speakers are. You want something that matches them as much as possible. I'm a monopole fan myself, but only because bipoles were just starting to take off when I got my NHT's.
