Rear speakers not working on Samsung HT setup?

Just curious, are rear speakers ever disabled by default or something?

Im using the same speaker wire that worked with my last setup and i've swiched +/- in both terminals and I get no sound out of the rear speakers either way. Is it possible that it is a setting or are the speakers broke? It seems unlikely that both rear speakers would be defective.

I havent been able to check through the settings yet because I dont have the TV for the DVD player yet. I'm not too familiar with home theater stuff so I just wanted to get some input here before I go much further.

Thanks

How do you have the DVD player connected?

Is the receiver detecting Dolby Digital or DTS as the signal type? Are you sure you're listening to source material that has surround information to be played back?
Any surround processing modes on other than straight DD / DTS?

It could definitely be the case that not all speakers are enabled in the settings.

If you want to ensure that the speakers work, swap them out with the front ones to make sure they play.

DVD player is connected to power and speakers, nothing else.

Hmm, I didnt notice it saying either Dolby Digital or DTS, I'll have to check on that.

Source may be my issue here, so far I've tried an audio CD and the built-in FM tuner. Both only play from the front speakers. I figured even if didnt have 'surround information' it would just play the same through all speakers though.

Also, I havent noticed any test tones or option to play one. Most likely because I need an actual TV to view such options.

Audio CDs are 2 channels, they should only play from the fronts unless you apply special processing through the reciever. FM broadcast are the same.

So it's a DVD player / receiver integrated together?

Yeah, venkman is right about CD and FM just being stereo. Unless you have something like Dolby Prologic II or some other surround effect enabled, then you should just get the front two speakers and sub playing.

You didn't mention your center channel speaker before. Do you have one? Is that one not playing as well? (I would assume so unless you have something like 3-stereo as and effect enabled)

Thanks venkman and Yoyo.

Yes it is one of the Samsung boxed HT setups. DVD player/receiver integrated.

I'm not using the center channel speaker or a sub actually, just the 4 speakers. What it is for is to a play a promo video in the lobby at my work. The speakers are in each corner of the lobby, there is really no room for a sub or center channel, nor are they necessary.

I guess I can safely assume the rear speakers do work though, I just didnt have a DVD or surround effect source to test today.

I appreciate the help :)

What is your source material going to be for the promo video?

If it's a DVD, you might be in bad shape without the center channel installed. Depending on the specific source material and how your HTIB set handles things, you may miss some of the sound. On a standard DVD movie, something like 70% of the sound would tend to be on the "Center" track. If you're planning on playing a standard DVD movie, then a lot of the sound may be lost if your HTIB set is unable to redirect the sound to the other speakers. A standard receiver should have the option to do that, but some of these integrated units may not let you do something like that since they are intended to work in a very specific way with the included components.
