rear projection television problem

I have a Sony rear projection television. Convergence is off - only for the red. In the top left, the red is projected low. Bottom right, the red is low. Center of the screen - perfect. I have the tech manual & could replace the chips, if necessary.

However, one of my sons informed me that when he was getting behind the television (xbox or something) and he pulled it forward on the stand (4" off the ground), "it might have bumped against the floor." And that's "about" (in his words) when the problem started happening.

I've fiddled with all the technical adjustments in the menu, but can't quite get it right. Before I go ahead and fry the television attempting to replace the convergence chips, else electrocuting myself, anyone know if there's something else that may have been simply "knocked out of whack" that would affect only the red? Magnets?

you should be able to just adjust the convergence of red. Or is it so out of spec that it is beyond the adjustment ranges?

Are you adjusting it in the service menu? There are coarse and fine adjustments you can do to align just one of the CRTs. It's best done with a test pattern and the other guns turned off.

Yes, I was adjusting it in the service menu. It's that out of spec, but only in the corners.

your adjustment should be square by square no?

Sort of square by square adjustments. However, as I adjust one area, it shifts the adjacent areas slightly. I spent over an hour trying & my son spent an hour or two working on it. We can get it so the bottom corner is perfect, but can't quite adjust the upper left corner enough. Close, but not quite. I'm a bit leery about saving the adjustments, because unless I misunderstood something I read, if I ultimately have to replace the convergence chips, I'll be screwed going back the other way.

It's not the convergence chip's fault you knocked some magnet out of position

its probably just coincidence. sonys are known for that. i have one that did it, and my friend has one that did it too. his is still under warranty. the gboard on the sonys suck something bad. good luck with it, as i have found that board to cost somewhere around 300 bux with a core charge of around 100. So, all in all its like 200 to fix it with a replacement board which is easier than soldering it yourself. The chips connections are small, and hard to get just right.

Yep. Sounds like a manual convergence is in order. There should be guides out there for OPs model. But by running parts of the convergence at the ends of the service menu knobs will cause premature failure.

Hey doc, whats the tv's model number?

I have one too and one or both of the convergence chip goes bad about once a year
Both the chips cost about 12$ after shipping, and if you remove the back cover of your tv its the 2 chips that are mounted to the big metal heat sink

Its not that hard to take out, if you've never done any sort of soldering could practice on a old radio or something
