was on freeway going about 80 in the fast lane behind this SUV for a while... then he suddenly breaks and I couldnt stop fast enough (either I didnt react fast enough or I was following too close...) and i hit him in the back...

And then he proceeds to change lanes to the shoulder because i assume he wants to talk to me.. but in the process he hits another car because I guess he didn't check his mirrors....

but not just ANY car... he hits a car with a mexican mom and her pregnant daughter so of course they're freaking out just screaming in spanish the whole time while I'm just like watf...

So the first accident is pretty much my fault no matter what right? But I assume I'm not really at fault for the second one....

Let insurance take care of it and be glad everyone is alright (i hope).
You do have insurance, right?

afaik, the answer to your first question is yes. If you were that close to the guy, bad job you. I don't think you can get charged/ticketed for the second one (and the guy being a moron).

Well they probably wont need to know that ...

but in any case you were following too close, is what they're going to say.

$hit happens man. First one was your fault, but it won't be as bad as you think. Probably a ticket and raised insurance premiums. Just be glad you don't live here in NJ, you'd have to take out a second mortgage. =0)

1st = you. You might get an expensive ticket, and insurance premium will go way up, or maybe even cancelled. Try to clear your driving record by taking a driver's education course, if your state allows that.

2nd=may be on you too. You know the SUV driver will claim you caused the chain reaction. Bad situation! Try to get your insurance company to help settle which party is responsible. It's super important, because the people in the 3rd car might come after the responsible party a long time later claiming their neck hurts, or other shakedown scam.

You have my sympathy.
